According to the BNAmericas, after falling by 18.8% in July and 26% in June, Mexico's gold production fell again by 24.6% in August, mainly due to the four-month strike at the Penasquito mine operated by Newmont.
Data from Mexico's Federal Statistics Institute (Inegi) showed that in August, the country's gold production was 5,095 kilograms (approximately 164,000 ounces), a month-on-month decrease of 0.7%. In the first eight months, Mexico's gold production fell by 7.2% year-on-year.
In August, Mexico's silver output was 288,662 kilograms, a year-on-year decrease of 10.3% and a month-on-month decrease of 3.3%. Lead production was 9,056 tons, a decrease of 24.6%. Zinc production was 18,488 tons, a decrease of 33.3%.
Copper production was 40,684 tons, a decrease of 1.1%. Sulfur, coking coal, iron ore pellets and fluorite also declined, but non-coking coal and gypsum production increased.
Inegi data showed that the entire mining industry, including mining, processing and metallurgy, shrank by 12.8% in August, following a 7.6% decline in July. In the first eight months, Mexico's mining industry shrank by 3.9%.
