Passenger car sales in Europe (a total of 26 markets) fell 18 per cent year-on-year to 713714 in August and 33 per cent compared with August 2019, according to foreign media reports from, JATO Dynamics. The cumulative sales since 2021 is 8095419, up 12.5% from the same period last year, but the European car market still faces difficulties due to the shortage of chips.
Felipe Munoz, global analyst at JATO Dynamics, said: "the chip shortage is a major setback for OEM manufacturers who are still struggling to address the impact of the pandemic. Production problems and delays in the delivery of new cars have affected sales, with insufficient supply from dealers forcing many consumers to either look for used cars or simply postpone their purchase plans. Under normal circumstances, consumers may have to wait many months to buy a new Ferrari, but now they have the same problem when buying ordinary models. "
The good news, however, is that sales of electric cars have improved in Europe. The number of electric vehicles registered in Europe in August was 151737, up 61 per cent from a year earlier. With this sales, the market share of electric vehicles in Europe is 21%, the second highest in European history. So far this year, cumulative sales of electric vehicles in Europe have reached 1.32 million.
In addition, August is a special month for the European market, as sales of electric cars surpass those of diesel cars for the first time in history. In the same period last year, electric cars registered 158300 fewer than diesel vehicles, but last month, electric vehicles registered 10100 more than diesel vehicles.
The Volkswagen ID.3 continues its momentum in July and continues to be the best-selling electric car in Europe, with 7904 registrations, according to JATO Dynamics. This is enough to make it 15th in the overall ranking of all models. Tesla Model 3 was not far behind, with 7824 registered vehicles, followed by Volkswagen ID.4, sales of 4624 vehicles. Tesla Model Y successfully entered the Top 10 list of pure electric sales, with 3478 vehicles registered in August.
Among plug-in hybrid models, the Ford Wing Tiger (Kuga) PHEV ranks first with 3512 registrations and is likely to be the highest-selling PHEV this year.
