[last year, the theoretical recovery of 478000 tons of lithium-ion batteries in China was less than half of the actual recovery.] in 2020, the theoretical recovery of lithium-ion batteries in the Chinese market reached 478000 tons, of which the theoretical recovery of automotive (EV) lithium power batteries has exceeded that of small (Small) lithium-ion batteries, reaching 257000 tons. EVTank predicts that the theoretical recovery of lithium-ion batteries in China will reach 988000 tons by 2025.

Recently, research institutions EVTank, Ivy Economic Research Institute and China Battery Industry Research Institute jointly released the "White Paper on the Development of Lithium Ion Battery Recycling, disassembly and echelon Utilization Industry in China (2021)". According to the statistics of the white paper, the theoretical recovery of lithium-ion batteries in the Chinese market reached 478000 tons in 2020, of which the theoretical recovery of automotive (EV) lithium power batteries has exceeded that of small (Small) lithium-ion batteries, reaching 257000 tons. EVTank predicts that the theoretical recovery of lithium-ion batteries in China will reach 988000 tons by 2025, with a significantly faster growth rate.

Another set of data disclosed in the White Paper on the Development of China's Lithium-ion Battery Recycling and disassembly and echelon Utilization Industry (2021) shows that although the theoretical recovery of lithium-ion batteries in the Chinese market reached 478000 tons in 2020, however, the actual amount of recycling that can be counted is only 196000 tons, accounting for only 41 percent. And a large proportion of the actual recovery volume is dealt with by enterprises that do not have the recycling qualification (the whitelist of battery recycling enterprises of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology).

Statistics from the White Paper on the Development of China's Lithium-ion Battery Recycling and disassembly and echelon Utilization Industry (2021) show that in 2020, the lithium-ion battery recycling enterprises are still dominated by Bang Pu and Grimmei. In terms of actual handling capacity, the two enterprises have a combined market share of more than 50%, but the white paper also points out that the entire lithium-ion battery recycling industry lacks norms and standards. A large number of small enterprises and even individuals are engaged in operating activities in the lithium battery recycling industry chain, and there is a phenomenon of "Bad money drives out good" in the whole market.

Wu Hui, general manager of the Research Department of Yiwei Economic Research Institute and director of China Battery Industry Research Institute, analyzed that at present, China's power battery market is still in its early stage of development, and due to factors such as imperfect recycling channels and lack of market supervision, most of the decommissioned batteries flow into informal enterprises or individual hands, making it difficult for compliance enterprises to recover, and the recovery rate is obviously on the low side. Therefore, Wu Hui believes that a perfect recycling channel is an important barrier for lithium-ion battery recycling enterprises, which will be directly related to the survival and development of recycling enterprises.
