Recently, political protests and general strikes broke out in the Challhuahuacho region of Peru, hindering the transport of copper concentrates and the flow of personnel in MMG Las Bambas.

SMM编译:近日,秘鲁Challhuahuacho地区爆发了政治抗议和大罢工活动,阻碍了MMG Las Bambas的铜精矿运输和人员的流通。

The general strike was launched on November 30th by the Farmers' Federation, the National Defense Front and the Youth Federation (Farmers Federation, the Defense Front and the Youth Federation) in the region. They asked the central government to comply with Challhuahuacho's decree 005-2016-PCM, which advocates giving priority to economic and social development, and asked the government to start paying the related costs stipulated in the mining regulations in 2021. Mining regulations stipulate that 50% of the corporate income tax collected by the national government from mining companies shall be transferred to provincial and regional municipalities that carry out mining activities.

At the same time, protesters set up blockades in the Ranra area, Quehuira and the Manantiales community, the strategic stronghold of the national corridor used by Las Bambas to transport and receive goods.

The protesters demanded a meeting with VioletaBerm ú dez, general manager of MMG Las Bambas and chairman of the Council of Ministers, to begin negotiations to end the protest.

However, MMG said in a communique sent to the El Comercio newspaper that, Las Bambas had nothing to do with the protesters' claims because they would be dealt with by the Peruvian government and the Challhuahuacho region.

MMG also said the strike was affecting the royalties it paid to local and municipal governments and local universities, (royalties).

In this context both local and provincial authorities have contacted their national authorities to request the establishment of a round table to discuss current issues.

Las Bambas is the ninth largest copper mine in the world. Copper concentrate production is expected to be between 350000 and 370000 tonnes by 2020, accounting for about 2 per cent of global projected production. However, in April, due to the covid-19 pandemic, MMG withdrew the mine's guidance and did not provide new full-year production guidance.
