Since 1978, Fang Yi, former vice premier of the State Council, has been entrusted by Deng Xiaoping, then general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, to devote a great deal of painstaking efforts to Baotou, from mineral processing, separation to development and application of rare earths.

Today, rare earths in the north have completed the industrial layout of 30, 000 tons of magnetic materials, 15000 tons of polishing materials, 3000 tons of hydrogen storage materials, 1000 tons of luminous materials and 50, 000 cubic meters of catalytic materials. Among them, the production capacity of magnetic materials and polishing materials ranks first in the world. At the same time, selectively develop rare earth terminal application products and enter the LED industry. At present, the trademarks of "Bayan Obo" and "Wuhua" have become the only two "well-known trademarks in China" in the rare earth industry, and the "Bayan Obo" trademark has been internationally registered in the United States, Japan, the European Union, South Korea and Australia.

The development history of China's rare earth industry is a history of scientific and technological progress. Since the reform and opening up, scientific researchers with Baotou Steel as the main body have independently developed a series of basic processes and technologies for the rare earth industry, and these scientific research achievements have sprung up at the source of China's rare earth industry like extraordinary peaks and mountains, driving China's rare earth industry to flow eastward from an absolute height.
As a listed company originally set up by mineral processing and separation enterprises, the initial business of northern rare earths is only in the primary processing such as rare earth mineral processing and separation. After entering the new century, northern rare earths began to develop downstream functional materials and application products, but soon faced with the bottleneck of weak foundation and lack of talents.
Since the 12th five-year Plan, northern rare earths have further increased their investment in scientific research in rare earth institutes, built the largest pilot test base for rare earth materials in China, further promoted the close connection of production, learning and research, and accelerated the industrialization of scientific and technological achievements. Tianjin Branch of rare Earth Institute has been established to make full use of talents, funds, technology and other high-quality scientific research resources in Beijing and Tianjin. The State key Laboratory for Research and Comprehensive Utilization of rare Earth Resources in Bayan Obo was approved and built, which achieved a "zero" breakthrough in the State key Laboratory of Inner Mongolia Autonomous region, and at the same time, further improved the research level of Baiyunebo. Baotou rare Earth Research and Development Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences was jointly built with the Chinese Academy of Sciences to make full use of the advantages of high-end technology and talents of the Chinese Academy of Sciences to promote the extension of the rare earth industry chain in the north.
At present, 18 rare earth technology centers have been established in the north. Among them, there are four national centers, including "State key Laboratory for Research and Comprehensive Utilization of rare Earth Resources in Bayan Obo", "State Engineering Research Center for rare Earth Metallurgy and functional Materials", "Productivity Promotion Center for Northern rare Earth Industry" and the largest pilot test base for new rare earth materials in China. "Baotou rare Earth Research and Development Center of Chinese Academy of Sciences" was jointly established with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Science and Technology Department of the Autonomous region, and the Baotou Municipal Government. There are two levels of "rare earth new material academician workstation" in the autonomous region and Baotou city. In 2001, the first postdoctoral research station in Baotou was established in northern rare earths, which leads the world in the ability of scientific research and innovation of rare earths.
At present, aiming at the development and utilization of Bayan Obo rare earth mine and China's rare earth resources, northern rare earths have made great achievements in rare earth mineral processing, rare earth hydrometallurgy, rare earth materials and applications. There are more than 500 scientific research projects and 114 award-winning achievements, including 51 national awards, 115 invention patents and 132 utility model patents, 139 national or industry standards have been revised, and 276 professional papers have been published in foreign core journals.
The 13th five-year Plan period is a key period for the transformation and upgrading of rare earths in the north, improving quality and efficiency, and stepping into the high end of the industry. According to the requirements of strategic transformation focusing on rare earths in Baotou Iron and Steel Co., Ltd., during the 13th five-year Plan period, the industrial economies of scale of rare earths in the north were further expanded, the sales income reached more than 30 billion yuan, and the industry of rare earth raw materials was intensive, modernized and based. The scale and market share of rare earth magnetic materials, polishing materials and rare earth catalytic materials rank first in the country, while the industrial scale and market share of hydrogen storage materials, luminescent materials and rare earth alloy materials rank among the top five in the country.
