Domestic shortages of secondary lead are likely to ease this week as smelters in Guizhou province resume operation

SHANGHAI, May 22 (SMM) – Domestic shortages of secondary lead are likely to ease this week as smelters in Guizhou province resume operation, SMM believes.

In Guizhou, large smelters began to purchase raw materials and resumed operations last week. They are expected to produce 800 mt of secondary lead per day, SMM learned. Production resumed after the province's crackdown and inspections on illegal disposal of solid waste concluded on May 16.

Secondary lead smelters in Jiangxi province are likely to resume production by the end of this week when the central inspection team completes its environmental probes.

In other regions, environmental restrictions on secondary lead production will persist till June. In Guangdong province, an estimated daily output of 200 mt of secondary lead was affected by inspections on solid waste disposal last week. A local smelter told SMM that it expects its suspension to last till the end of May or the start of June.

In Shandong province, a large smelter of secondary lead has halted production as of Tuesday May 22. This was in response to the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Qingdao on June 9. Some 400 mt of secondary lead is likely to be affected daily until the smelter resumes operations in the second half of June.
