SHANGHAI, Feb. 16 (SMM) – China will tighten control over rare earth production this year, Xin Guobin, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Information & Technology (MIIT), was quoted by the Association of China Rare Earth Industry as emphasizing in a recent meeting.
No approval shall be granted “in principle” to new rare earth mining and smelting & separation projects not from six rare earth groups, Xin said. Meanwhile, China will continue cracking down on illegal activities in rare earth mining, production and circulation links, Xin added.
As of the end of 2015, Aluminum Corp of China, China Northern Rare Earth (Group) High-tech, and Xiamen Tungsten have completed rare earth industry consolidation, while consolidation by China Minmetals, Guangdong Rare Earth Corp and China South Rare Earth Group were still under way, Xin said. Xin also pointed out that 22 rare earth mining companies out of 23 total nationwide and 54 rare earth smelting & separation companies out of 59 total nationwide have been incorporated into large rare earth groups.
