Indonesia’s coal demand for power generation is projected to reach 173.83 million tonnes in 2027, comprising approximately 89 million tonnes of medium-rank coal (MRC) and 76 million tonnes of low-rank coal (LRC), according to PLN Energi Primer Indonesia (PLN EPI). PLN Group’s coal demand is estimated at 83.84 million tonnes, while IPPs require around 75.99 million tonnes.
Most Indonesian power plants are designed to use MRC, while domestic coal reserves are dominated by LRC, creating a supply mismatch. PLN EPI is considering upgrading power plant facilities to accommodate lower-calorie coal, although the process requires significant investment and time.
