【SMM Aluminum Flash News】Thailand Tightens Scrap Import Inspections, Proposes Ban on Aluminium and Copper Scrap

Published: Oct 22, 2026 13:55 (GMT+8)
On October 21, Thailand’s Customs Department proposed to the Department of Foreign Trade a ban on imports of ferrous scrap (HS 7204), copper scrap (7404), aluminium scrap (7602) and rubber scrap (4004), with a proposed 6–12-month transition period, to combat the smuggling of electronic and hazardous waste. Customs has intensified physical inspections of containers declared as metal scrap and other high-risk cargo. The blanket import ban remains a proposal, with its effective date and implementation details pending. Tighter inspections could delay raw material clearance and increase logistics costs in the near term, potentially supporting domestic copper and aluminium scrap prices in Thailand.
