[SMM Stainless Steel Flash] Anglo American’s Brazil nickel sale to MMG faces EU scrutiny over stainless feedstock

Published: Oct 20, 2026 10:20 (GMT+8)
Anglo American’s roughly $500m sale of its Brazilian nickel business to MMG remains uncertain as the European Commission questions whether EU stainless mills would keep reliable access to ferronickel. Anglo is open to remedies, but if the deal fails the assets could go into care and maintenance, forcing European mills to seek alternative nickel units.

[SMM Stainless Steel Flash] India’s leading stainless mill raises October 304 and 316 coil prices
India’s leading stainless producer raised 304 and 316 hot- and cold-rolled coil prices from 11 October, citing tight supply in some sizes, scarce scrap and high ferromolybdenum costs. Weaker nickel and a dip in market 316 HRC prices the same week suggest acceptance may be limited.

[SMM Stainless Steel Flash] BIR sees weak Q4 stainless scrap demand in Europe, firmer outlook for US and Asia
BIR expects European stainless scrap demand and prices to fall sharply in Q4 as energy costs weigh on mills and some end-use demand shifts to North America and Asia. The US outlook is cautiously positive after higher Q2 melt output, while India’s rising stainless output favours domestic scrap as rupee volatility curbs imports.
