[Indonesia Still in Talks with EU and UK over 50% Steel Tariffs, Impact on Exports Yet to Be Assessed]

Published: Oct 19, 2026 10:12 (GMT+8)
Indonesia’s Ministry of Trade is still negotiating with the UK and the EU over tariffs of up to 50% that could affect Indonesian steel exports, Director General of International Trade Negotiations Johni Martha said on October 17, 2026, at the Trade Expo Indonesia seminar in Tangerang. He declined to disclose progress, saying the outcome of government-to-government talks remains open. He added that the government cannot yet estimate the impact on exports, since the policy has yet to be implemented. He noted that raising bound tariffs is a WTO member’s right, applied on a most-favoured-nation basis. Earlier, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto said the US, EU, and UK have each imposed 50% duties on Indonesian steel, and urged Indonesia to take similar steps to protect its domestic industry.
