Tin Market Midday Commentary, October 16, 2026
1. Price Review
SMM #1 tin was quoted at 377,400-379,700 yuan/mt today, averaging 378,550 yuan/mt, up 5,200 yuan/mt from the previous trading day.
The price center of the most-traded SHFE tin contract rebounded, closing the morning at 382,980 yuan/mt, up 9,150 yuan (+2.45%); volume reached 127,008 lots, staying high, while open interest stood at 33,570 lots, down 2,240 lots on the day, a rebound driven by position reduction.
LME tin rebounded in tandem, with LME tin 3M last quoted at $51,250/mt, up $835 (+1.66%), reclaiming the $51,000 level; volume was 227 lots, and the SHFE/LME price ratio edged up to around 7.47.
2. Price Logic
Overnight and into today, Fed officials' remarks have generally shifted to a wait-and-see stance. Bowman, Goolsbee, and Daly all indicated that although September inflation came in above expectations and core inflation remains sticky, there is no need to rush into rate hikes, preferring to wait for more data.
Fed Chairman Warsh's speech at the IMF annual meeting was also a market variable. He called artificial intelligence the most far-reaching economic transformation of his lifetime, arguing that AI's impact on the demand side of the economy will manifest before supply-side shocks. AI boosts productivity and output capacity, which creates supply. If an economy's supply capacity is expanding, inflationary pressures are more likely to be temporary, and policy need not resort to aggressive rate hikes to suppress them. Therefore, Warsh believes AI development helps central banks build confidence in their judgment of economic data and monetary policy. On the policy path, he stressed that the Fed is clearly committed to achieving price stability, does not favor prejudging rate decisions, and does not advocate telegraphing potential actions at remaining meetings. The October and December meetings will be key windows for forming clear policy judgments.
On balance, market bets on an October rate hike have pulled back notably, the US dollar index and Treasury yields have declined, risk appetite has recovered, precious metals and US equities rebounded overnight, and Asian stocks moved higher this morning. For tin, in addition to the phased easing of tightening pressure, Warsh's positive framing of AI has also repaired the demand narrative for the semiconductor supply chain.
3. Spot Market
Spot market trading sentiment weakened compared with the previous two days. When prices fell rapidly earlier, downstream enterprises had already replenished inventories sufficiently. Now, with the price center rebounding, downstream players have shifted to digesting inventories and purchasing according to production pace, with limited willingness to chase the rally. However, after the sharp price decline, suppliers have shown clear intent to hold prices firm. The decline in spot absolute prices was smaller than that in futures, and most suppliers reported tight cargo availability, quoting in line with the market but holding back from selling at low prices. On the raw material side, the average tin concentrate TC for 40% grade (Yunnan) was 17,500 yuan/mt Sn, down 500 yuan.
On the LME side, overseas fundamentals remained generally stable. On the supply side, mine production in Africa continued at a normal pace, and monthly exports from Indonesia, a major tin ingot producer, remained stable. On the demand side, long-term contract deliveries dominated, with limited spot trading activity. As a result, LME pricing continued to follow the macro environment and SHFE trends, with little independent momentum.
4. Comprehensive Outlook
Overall, after the sharp price decline earlier, today's rebound is a recovery driven by macro positives rather than a trend reversal. However, with spot trading weakening and downstream entering an inventory digestion phase, the sustainability of the rebound still needs to be validated by demand. In the short term, SHFE tin is expected to consolidate in the 375,000-382,000 range, while LME tin consolidates around the $50,000 level. Amid the tug-of-war between longs and shorts, before the month-end rate meeting concludes, as phased data releases and divergent official remarks emerge, the futures price center is expected to swing back and forth.
