Inflation data exceeded expectations, domestic and overseas copper futures pulled back in tandem [SMM Copper Morning Comment]

SMM Oct 16 news: Overnight, LME copper closed down 0.88%, driven by increased bearish positions; SHFE copper closed down 0.71%, driven by reduced bullish positions. On the macro front, US September PPI and retail sales data came in stronger than expected. Rising inflationary pressure, combined with hawkish remarks from the US Fed, news on US-Iran tensions, and easing mine strikes, dragged copper prices lower under pressure. Copper prices are expected to hold up well in a narrow range today.

1. Overnight session LME copper: Opened at $14,317.5/mt, hit a high of $14,382/mt, a low of $14,256/mt, and closed at $14,309/mt, down 0.88%. Trading volume was 30,800 lots, with open interest at 270,200 lots, up 5,126 lots from the previous trading day, driven by increased bearish positions. The most-traded SHFE copper 2611 contract: Opened at 108,850 yuan/mt, hit a high of 109,190 yuan/mt, a low of 108,600 yuan/mt, and closed at 108,970 yuan/mt, down 0.71%. Trading volume was 37,500 lots, with open interest at 185,000 lots, down 3,508 lots from the previous trading day, driven by reduced bullish positions.

2. Macro front US September PPI rose 6.3% YoY and 1.3% MoM, both well above expectations, while retail sales rose 0.8% MoM, also beating expectations, signaling mounting inflationary pressure. US Fed's Hammack said worsening inflation expectations could force the Fed to take more aggressive action. Meanwhile, according to US media reports, the US has drawn up new strike plans against Iran, potentially using the "Mother of All Bombs" for the first time to target Iranian energy and nuclear facilities. Stronger-than-expected US inflation data, coupled with easing strike events, pushed copper prices lower under pressure.

3. Fundamentals Supply side: Warrant registrations increased ahead of delivery, and unmatched warrants are expected to flow out after delivery, but low-priced available cargoes in the market remain relatively limited. Demand side: Downstream purchases improved slightly after copper prices pulled back, but overall volumes did not increase significantly, with transactions still dominated by rigid demand, reflecting weak demand performance. Inventory: Data summary: As of Thursday, Oct 15, SMM nationwide mainstream copper inventories across major regions rose 12,100 mt WoW to around 110,000 mt, with total inventories down more than 60,000 mt from above 170,000 mt in the same period last year.

Data Source Statement: Except for publicly available information, all other data are processed by SMM based on publicly available information, market communication, and relying on SMM's internal database model. They are for reference only and do not constitute decision-making recommendations.

[AI data centers use 20-40 tonnes of copper per MW, adding new demand]
Every AI data center requires substantial power, and essentially all of that power moves through copper. Data compiled by MINING indicates that a data center uses roughly 20 to 40 tonnes of copper for each megawatt of power. This copper intensity means the rapid build-out of AI computing clusters and hyperscale facilities is translating directly into additional refined copper consumption. The metal is used in cables, busbars, transformers, switchgear and other power-distribution equipment, making data-center construction a visible source of incremental demand. The article discusses generating monthly income via NYSEARCA:IYM, but its central premise remains the AI-driven copper trade. For the copper supply chain, demand is dispersed across end users, yet per-project volumes are large enough to support refined copper consumption expectations.

[Trump tariff threat builds US copper stocks above 1 million tonnes as COMEX-LME spread narrows to 310 USD/tonne]
Trump's tariff threat has pushed US copper inventories above 1 million tonnes without public spending, concentrating about 70% of known world stocks in COMEX warehouses and lifting prices despite a global surplus. Shippers moved metal to the US after a February tariff study, driving COMEX copper to a record 6.83 USD/lb (15,057 USD/tonne) on September 22. The COMEX-LME spread peaked above 3,000 USD/tonne in July and is now near 310 USD/tonne, weakening arbitrage incentives. Commerce was due to report by June 30, letting Trump decide on a 15% refined copper import tariff from January 1, 2027, rising to 30% in 2028; no decision has come. Macquarie puts total US copper stocks near 1.6 million tonnes, with COMEX inventories up about 750% to over 714,000 tonnes.

[Tartana Minerals advances talks to access Mungana copper processing plant]
Tartana Minerals is in talks with Mt Garnet Mineral Finance Pty Ltd (MGMF), mortgagee in possession of Aurora Metals Ltd (in liquidation), to gain access to the Mungana processing plant. If agreed, Tartana could treat its copper ore at the plant, which has a nameplate capacity of 600,000 tpy. Feed would come from opencast mining of its 45,000 tonnes contained copper resource at 0.45% Cu, open at depth and targeted by drilling to exceed 100,000 tonnes. Managing Director Dr Stephen Bartrop said three years of work have defined the open-pit copper and zinc resources and metallurgical testwork for flotation. Mungana's chequered history reflected unsustainable underground ore supply, a constraint the open pit can remove, though the plan remains subject to conditions precedent.
