Spot premiums decline as delivery approaches amid widening price spread between futures contracts; spot premiums expected to rebound next week [SMM South China Copper Cathode Spot Weekly Review]

September 30, 2026 news:

Guangdong region: This week, premiums in the region showed a continuous downward trend, mainly because the price spread between futures contracts remained large at above 600 yuan/mt. As delivery approached, downstream demand was weak, and suppliers had to keep cutting prices to sell. As of Thursday, high-quality copper was quoted at a premium of 150 yuan/mt, down 250 yuan/mt WoW; standard-quality copper was quoted at a discount of 100 yuan/mt, down 200 yuan/mt WoW; and SX-EW copper was quoted at a discount of 160 yuan/mt, down 200 yuan/mt WoW. On Thursday, the price spread for standard-quality copper premiums between Shanghai and Guangdong was 70 yuan/mt, with Shanghai higher. The price difference was relatively small, so there was no inter-regional transfer of cargo. According to SMM statistics, as of Thursday, total inventory in Guangdong warehouses stood at 16,800 mt, down 3,200 mt WoW, with warrants totaling 4,960 mt, up 4,511 mt. Specifically: This week, warehouse arrivals were 15,800 mt/week, up 6,000 mt/week WoW, slightly above the annual average (14,000 mt/week). Arrivals of imported copper were relatively small this week, but arrivals of domestic copper were relatively large, mainly due to concentrated arrivals after the holiday. Warehouse withdrawals were 19,000 mt/week, up 12,500 mt WoW, far above the annual average (14,200 mt/week). Downstream processing enterprises gradually returned to normal production levels after the National Day holiday, which was the main reason for the increase in warehouse withdrawals.

Looking ahead to next week, supply is expected to decrease due to maintenance at nearby smelters, but downstream consumption is expected to recover as copper prices decline. Therefore, we believe inventory will continue to fall next week, and spot premiums will remain at high levels.

Centinela Concentrates produced 900 metric tonnes of contained molybdenum in the third quarter of 2026, up 12.5% from the preceding quarter, although nine-month output remained 11.5% lower year on year at 2,300 metric tonnes. Molybdenum grade increased to 0.016% from 0.014%, while recovery rose to 79.1% from 76.8%. Molybdenum sales increased 14.3% to 800 metric tonnes, despite a 4.7% decline in copper-in-concentrate output. The figures predate the post-quarter strike involving unions representing about 20% of directly employed workers, and no molybdenum loss has been quantified. Production is on a 100% mine basis, not Antofagasta’s 70% attributable share or physical concentrate mass.

Los Pelambres produced 2,000 metric tonnes of contained molybdenum in the third quarter of 2026, down 13.0% from the preceding quarter. Nine-month output fell 23.9% year on year to 6,700 metric tonnes. Molybdenum grade declined to 0.018% from 0.019%, while recovery fell to 76.5% from 81.4%. Sales decreased 24.0% to 1,900 metric tonnes. Copper production rose 17.5% as inventories were released, but molybdenum did not recover, highlighting continuing grade and recovery constraints. The figures are on a 100% mine basis, not Antofagasta’s 60% attributable share or physical concentrate mass.

Antofagasta plc reported third-quarter contained-molybdenum production of 2,900 metric tonnes, down 6.5% from the preceding quarter. Output for the first nine months of 2026 fell 21.1% year on year to 9,000 metric tonnes, principally because of lower molybdenum grades at Los Pelambres. The average market price rose 11.5% quarter on quarter to 33.0 United States dollars per pound, while the realised price increased 3.8% to 35.7 United States dollars per pound. Production is reported on a 100% mine basis for Los Pelambres and Centinela, not Antofagasta’s attributable share or physical concentrate mass.
