LME backwardation structure narrows, SHFE/LME price ratio recovers, registered copper premiums stay high [SMM Yangshan spot copper]

Published: Oct 14, 2026 13:23 (GMT+8)

On October 14, the average warrant price rose by $10/mt from the previous trading day to $136/mt (price range: $122-150/mt); the average B/L price rose by $4/mt from the previous trading day to $129/mt (price range: $120-138/mt); the average EQ copper (CIF B/L) price was flat from the previous trading day at $60/mt (price range: $55-65/mt), with quotations referencing cargoes arriving from October to early November.

The SHFE/LME price ratio recovered today, and the LME nearby backwardation structure narrowed somewhat. Market activity picked up in early trading, and premiums edged higher. According to SMM price assessment methodology, warrant quotations were adjusted for the QP change today. In addition, due to the current tight supply of registered warrants, warrant offers in the market remained elevated. Mainstream quotations for registered pyrometallurgy copper B/L were heard at around $130-140/mt, with a small number of registered pyrometallurgy copper warrant quotations at around $150-170/mt. Mainstream quotations for EQ copper arriving from late October to early November were at around $65-70/mt.

Rio Tinto posts flat Q3 copper output, holds 2026 guidance
Rio Tinto reported consolidated copper production of 205,000 tonnes in the September quarter, flat year-on-year and down 4% from the June quarter, taking nine-month output to 646,000 tonnes, up 1% versus 2025. Oyu Tolgoi in Mongolia drove the growth, with copper output up 27% year-on-year in Q3 and 29% year-to-date, running at an annualised rate of about 450,000 tonnes during the quarter. At Kennecott in the United States, the rebuilt flash converting furnace returned to normal capacity in late August, ahead of schedule, after an outage that weighed on quarterly cathode output. The group kept its 2026 copper production guidance of 800,000-870,000 tonnes unchanged and reaffirmed unit-cost guidance. Sustained Oyu Tolgoi growth partly offsets volume volatility at Kennecott and its Escondida interest as the group defends its full-year copper target.

As contract rollover approaches, the price spread between futures contracts narrows, and spot premiums continue to edge down [SMM Shanghai spot copper]
[SMM Shanghai Spot Copper] Looking ahead to tomorrow, tomorrow is the last trading day of the SHFE copper 2610 contract. Since SMM spot quotes are still based on the front-month contract, as delivery and contract rollover approach, changes in the price spread between the 2610-2611 contracts will directly affect spot premiums. Intraday, the next-month backwardation has narrowed significantly from its earlier high. If the price spread between futures contracts pulls back further, after conversion based on the spread structure, spot premiums against the 2610 contract tomorrow are expected to remain near parity, with a possibility of a slight rebound. Some suppliers have already started quoting against the 2611 contract in advance, with non-registered copper quoted at a premium of around 400 yuan/mt against the 2611 contract. On the supply-demand front, arrivals of domestic cargoes remain relatively limited recently, while purchases by downstream processing enterprises are also mainly need-based, leaving the overall market in a supply-demand weak pattern. Considering that tomorrow marks a key delivery period, spot market trading is expected to revolve more around price spreads between futures contracts and quotes after contract rollover, with close attention needed on open interest in the 2610 contract, warrants, and rapid changes in the next-month backwardation.
