[SMM Iron Ore] Maintenance losses climb to 1.9 million mt as lower freight erodes cost support

Published: Oct 13, 2026 17:15 (GMT+8)

DCE iron ore futures were weaker today. The most-traded I2701 contract settled at 677 yuan/mt, down 1.1% from the previous session. Qingdao port spot prices fell about 3 yuan/mt on average. Traders were reluctant to offer and some held back from quoting altogether. Mill enquiries were reasonable but overall trading was limited.

Demand continued to weigh on iron ore prices this week. SMM data showed hot metal output lost to blast furnace maintenance at 1.9011 million mt, up 78,600 mt week on week. That marks a third consecutive weekly increase, taking the cumulative rise since the end of September to more than 270,000 mt. Freight rates have also entered a downward trend, weakening cost support for iron ore. Prices are likely to stay soft in the near term.

[ World Steel Revises 2026 Demand Outlook to Slight Contraction ]
The World Steel Association officially cut its 2026 global demand outlook on October 12, 2026, now forecasting a slight overall contraction in worldwide consumption. Despite the pessimistic global adjustment, the association reiterated that India remains the world's primary growth engine, projecting Indian domestic demand to surge by 7.9% in 2026 and 8.0% in 2027. This divergent trend cements India's critical role in absorbing future seaborne metallurgical coal and high-grade iron ore volumes as Western markets stagnate. [SMM Iron Ore]

[ South Korea Unveils $747 Billion Green Transformation Plan ]
The South Korean government announced a massive 1,000 trillion won ($747 billion) energy transition strategy running through 2035 in early October 2026. The "Korea-Green Transformation" plan formally earmarks substantial state support for heavy industries to decarbonize, specifically targeting the commercialization of green steel via hydrogen-based direct reduction. The targeted capital injection aims to secure the long-term competitiveness of South Korea's integrated mills against tightening global carbon border taxes. [SMM Iron Ore]
