[SMM Iron Ore] Firmer spot lifts import margins as stock builds weigh on prices

Published: Oct 12, 2026 13:46 (GMT+8)

The average imported iron ore margin rose from 14.22 yuan/mt to 15.37 yuan/mt this period, supported by higher port spot prices.

On fundamentals, blast furnace maintenance continued to increase after the holiday. Some mills are expected to restock, but overall iron ore demand remains weak. Supply continues to rise and port inventories are building, weighing on prices. Watch the pace of decline in hot metal output ahead, and news flow around long-term contract negotiations. Imported margins are likely to hold a small profit in the near term.

[ ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih Placed on Cold Standby Mode ]
ArcelorMittal announced on October 11, 2026, that it is placing its massive Kryvyi Rih steelworks in Ukraine into cold standby mode following severe missile attacks that halted primary steel production. The critical safety maneuver will take two months to complete, preserving the industrial assets for potential future restarts. The indefinite curtailment of this strategic facility removes a massive volume of Eastern European long products and merchant pig iron from the regional supply chain. [SMM Iron Ore]

[ Turkish Ferrous Scrap Prices Jump by $28 per Tonne in September ]
Average imported ferrous scrap prices in Turkey recorded a steep increase of $28 per tonne throughout September 2026, driven by a modest demand recovery and tightening global availability. Turkish electric arc furnace operators are absorbing these escalating feedstock costs, severely pressuring conversion margins amid sluggish Mediterranean finished steel consumption. Analysts forecast that this raw material inflation may trigger corresponding price hikes for Turkish rebar and wire rod exports heading into late Q4. [SMM Iron Ore]

[ Ukrainian Steel Output Reaches 131,000 Tonnes in September ]
Official production data released on October 11, 2026, confirmed that Ukraine's domestic steelmakers produced a combined total of 131,000 tonnes of crude steel during September 2026. The depressed volumetric output highlights the severe operational difficulties and logistical bottlenecks constraining the nation's remaining heavy industry. With ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih now moving into cold standby, national output is expected to drop further, drastically limiting Ukraine's ability to export semi-finished billets to the EU market.
