[SMM PV Flash] Australia’s Renewable PPA Market Shifts from Volume Toward Flexibility and Value

Published: Oct 12, 2026 09:23 (GMT+8)
Energy consultancy ERM has highlighted a shift in Australia’s National Electricity Market (NEM), where renewable power purchase agreements are increasingly being assessed not only by generation volume but also by when and where electricity can be delivered. As conventional coal-fired generation gradually exits the market, demand for greater “firmness” and better generation “shape” is increasing. Buyers are placing more emphasis on output profiles, delivery periods and dispatchability rather than simply securing renewable energy volumes. The trend suggests that solar projects combined with battery storage, flexible dispatch and more sophisticated risk management could capture greater value in future PPA negotiations as the market moves from a volume-driven model toward a value-driven structure.

[SMM Silicon-based PV Morning Meeting Summary: Glass Price Hikes Implemented, Silicon Metal Destocking, Polysilicon Production Cuts Continue to Advance] China's polysilicon production in October will decline significantly, with production expected to fall below 100,000 mt. In addition to expectations for production cuts at some bases in south-west China due to the dry season, some bases in Xinjiang and other regions also face expectations for production cuts under coordinated reduction efforts.

[SMM PV Flash] PowerChina Commissions Integrated PV, CSP and Molten Salt Storage Project
PowerChina has completed grid connection of an integrated solar PV and concentrated solar power project in Gonghe, Qinghai province. The project combines photovoltaic generation, tower-based CSP, molten salt thermal storage and power-to-heat technology within a single system. The CSP section includes eight hours of molten salt storage, while electric heaters can convert surplus PV electricity into thermal energy for storage. The stored heat can later be used to generate electricity during evening peak demand or periods of low solar irradiation, improving dispatchability and reducing solar curtailment. The project demonstrates a hybrid approach that combines PV generation with thermal storage to provide longer-duration energy shifting and greater flexibility in high-renewable power systems.

[SMM PV Flash] Axian Energy and Africa GreenCo Sign Solar PPA in Zambia
Pan-African renewable energy developer Axian Energy has signed a solar power purchase agreement with energy aggregator and electricity trader Africa GreenCo for the Kudu solar project in Zambia. The project has also secured financial support from Standard Bank and Stanbic Bank Zambia and is progressing toward financial close and construction. Africa GreenCo operates a regional power aggregation and trading model that can reduce exposure to a single off-taker by selling electricity across multiple markets. The agreement reflects the growing role of aggregator-based PPA structures in supporting the financing and development of utility-scale solar projects across African power markets.
