[SMM Stainless Steel Flash] Outokumpu Unveils EvoMaterials for Low-Carbon Metals, Pilot Set for 2027
Outokumpu has unveiled EvoMaterials, a proprietary platform for producing high-purity metals with lower carbon emissions using sulfidation technology. Initial development focuses on enriched ferrochrome and chromium metal from the company's Kemi mine in Finland, targeting a Western supply chain for aerospace and defense applications, with modelling indicating potential cost competitiveness against conventional methods. A pilot plant in Londonderry, New Hampshire is scheduled to become operational in H1 2027, scaling the process from laboratory to one-tonne capacity. Industrial plant locations are being evaluated in the US and Europe for a 2030 target, with potential expansion into nickel, molybdenum, specialty alloys, and side-stream metal recovery.
