[SMM Nickel Market Flash] Alliance Nickel Advances NiWest to Phase 2 Vat Leach Testing

Published: Sep 29, 2026 15:33 (GMT+8)
Alliance Nickel has completed Phase 1 vat leach testing at its NiWest nickel-cobalt project in Western Australia. A roughly 2-tonne ore sample was tested for ore sizing, agglomeration conditions, leach kinetics and nickel-cobalt recovery performance. Following encouraging initial results, the company has approved Phase 2 testing to better simulate commercial operating conditions and assess ore variability across the Mt Kilkenny orebody, with completion targeted by year-end. The 2024 definitive feasibility study for Alliance Nickel’s NiWest project outlines a 35-year open-pit operation producing battery-grade nickel-cobalt sulphate. The project has an ore reserve of 84.7 million tonnes grading 0.94% nickel and 0.06% cobalt, with a post-tax NPV of about A$1.5 billion and a post-tax IRR of 17.6%. Alliance Nickel is now using its vat-leach test program to refine the project flowsheet and capital requirements ahead of further feasibility updates.

[SMM Nickel Market Flash] IMIP Says Solar Will Supplement Rather Than Fully Replace Fossil Power
IMIP said solar power cannot yet fully replace fossil energy across the industrial park, but will serve as an important part of a more diversified and efficient energy system. PT PMMI is nearing completion of a 0.57 MWp solar installation, while PT QMB is assessing solar deployment options. IMIP said tenants are adopting different models, including rooftop and canal-top solar systems, depending on site conditions.

Indonesia’s Morowali Industrial Park (IMIP) is continuing to expand solar power deployment across the industrial park to reduce fossil-fuel use and support its energy transition. Solar installations are already operating at ITSS, GCNS, OSMI and BTR, with BTR operating a 9.5 MWp system. IMIP said it will continue encouraging tenants to adopt solar power in support of Indonesia’s 2060 net-zero target.
