Pre-holiday Market Trading Sparse, Nickel Salt Prices Decline This Week

As of this Thursday, the SMM average price of battery-grade nickel sulphate declined.
Demand side, with the Mid-Autumn Festival approaching, enterprises maintaining operations had largely completed raw material stocking for the holiday period, and new raw material transportation was about to be disrupted. Downstream players broadly suspended spot purchases and showed low acceptance of nickel salt prices. Supply side, some upstream enterprises held relatively high inventory levels and planned to lower operating rates to sell and destock, but the overall scale of production cuts was weaker than the expected reduction in demand. Looking ahead, the market is expected to maintain a weak supply-demand pattern in the short term, with destocking as the main theme, and prices are expected to remain under pressure overall.
Inventory side, this week the upstream nickel salt smelter inventory index held at 8 days, the downstream precursor plant inventory index fell from 11.9 days to 11.6 days, and the integrated enterprise inventory index held at 9.8 days. In terms of buying and selling strength, this week the upstream nickel salt smelter Willingness to Sell Sentiment Factor held at 2.1, the downstream precursor plant purchasing sentiment factor held at 2.1, and the integrated enterprise sentiment factor held at 2.2. Nickel Prices Strengthen, Nickel Salt Costs Rebound

Cost side, MHP raw material supply remained relatively ample, and coupled with weak acceptance from downstream salt smelters, MHP payables weakened further this week. On nickel prices, production cuts at some Indonesian nickel iron operations stimulated a rebound in nickel prices. For the week overall, nickel prices strengthened while MHP payables remained weak, and the spot production cost of nickel salt rebounded WoW.

Indonesian nickel ore CIF average prices were broadly stable across the main grades: · 1.2% Ni: CIF average price at $26.5/wmt, unchanged · 1.3% Ni: CIF average price at $28.5/wmt, unchanged · 1.4% Ni: CIF average price at $51.8/wmt, unchanged · 1.5% Ni: CIF average price at $58.5/wmt, unchanged · 1.6% Ni: CIF average price at $63.4/wmt, unchanged In the downstream market, nickel pig iron production at several RKEF smelters in Indonesia Morowali Industrial Park (IMIP) has been reduced due to water shortages linked to El Niño. SMM's latest survey found some production lines operating at around 30–40% of normal levels from September 22. IMIP confirmed that some smelters have reduced production, while operations have not been fully halted and alternative water supplies are being explored. Meanwhile, the market continues to monitor supplementary 2026 RKAB approvals. Additional quotas are gradually entering the market, but the total additional allocation has yet to be officially disclosed. The latest developments have shifted market attention from quota approval itself toward how quickly approved quotas translate into actual ore production and deliveries. The revised nickel ore HPM formula under Kepmen ESDM No. 363.K/MB.01/MEM.B/2026 has been effective since September 15, with the corrective factor for 1.2% Ni limonite reduced from 26% to 14%. The revised formula places 1.2% Ni HPM at around $24.89/wmt, significantly closer to current market prices.

[SMM Stainless Steel Flash] India's Stainless Steel Longs Export Offers Stable W-o-W Amid Subdued Trade Activity
India's stainless steel longs export offers remained largely stable WoW in the assessment week, with trading activity subdued amid limited buyer interest. Elevated freight costs, tight scrap availability, and higher alloy costs continued to support sellers' price expectations. European buying interest remained muted amid uncertainty over CBAM implementation and quota-related developments. Indicative export offers held at USD2,350–2,380/t FOB India for 304 bright bars and USD4,320–4,350/t for 316 bright bars; BigMint assessments placed both at USD2,380/t and USD4,330/t FOB Nhava Sheva respectively, unchanged WoW. Domestically, the longs market held firm with 304 bright bars at INR 230,000/t (+INR 3,000/t WoW) and 316 at INR 398,000/t (+INR 7,000/t). The near-term export outlook remains stable, with gradual improvement possible as overseas buyers return from the holiday period, though weak UAE demand and elevated freight costs are expected to limit fresh bookings.
