Brazilian Rare Earths Commissions Pilot Plant, Aims for Phase 2 in 2027 with Expanded Metallurgical Program

Published: Sep 22, 2026 12:02 (GMT+8)
ASX-listed Brazilian Rare Earths (BRE) has successfully commissioned its Phase 1 metallurgical pilot plant in Camaçari, Brazil, producing the first batch of rare earth concentrates. The plant will be used for metallurgical test work required for feasibility studies on the Monte Alto rare earth mine and the proposed Camaçari smelting hub. BRE stated that it has secured joint investment and technical support for the Phase 2 hydrometallurgy plant, which is planned to commence production in Q2 2027. While Phase 1 will provide data to support process design refinement, equipment selection, and cost estimation, the Phase 2 pilot plant will expand the metallurgical program through hydrometallurgical extraction and separation to produce Pr-Nd oxide, heavy rare earth concentrates, and uranium yellowcake. Specifically, the Phase 2 pilot plant will test and validate recovery rates and commercialization pathways for uranium, scandium, niobium, titanium, and tantalum, assess the potential to reduce unit costs, evaluate lowering net unit costs to below $21 per kg of Pr-Nd equivalent as modeled in the scoping study, and expand cost advantages.

AuKing Mining Exceeds Expectations with Exceptionally Enriched Heavy Rare Earth Find in Malawi
AuKing Mining's initial drill sample analysis results from the Tundulu rare earth mine in southern Malawi not only exceeded expectations but also encountered "exceptionally enriched heavy rare earth." The most notable result from the initial sample analysis was an intersection of 91 meters at a depth of 40 meters, with total rare earth oxide (TREO) of 1.51%, including a 15-meter-thick ore body grading 3.4%. Additionally, an 80-meter intersection starting from the surface had a TREO grade of 1.54%, including an 11-meter-thick ore body grading 4.33%. The heavy rare earth-yttrium (HREE-Y) ore section grades were "exceptionally high."

US Invests $35.6M in Trilogy Minerals for Alaska Mining Project Stake
To advance the development of Trilogy Minerals' Upper Kobuk Mineral Projects (UKMP) in northwestern Alaska, the US government has invested $35.6 million for a 10% stake in the company. This investment will support the exploration and development of UKMP. The mining rights are jointly held by Ambler Metals and Australian miner South32, each with a 50% interest. Trilogy and South32 will split the proceeds equally and have committed to reinvesting in UKMP. Following the completion of this transaction, South32's direct shareholding in Trilogy has been diluted from 10.7% to 6%.

Cyclic Materials Launches Largest Rare Earth Recycling Plant in US, Set to Ship First Cargo Soon
According to foreign media reports, Canada-based Cyclic Materials has officially commissioned the largest rare earth recycling facility in the US, located in Mesa, Arizona. The facility can process 25,000 mt of retired components annually to create a new domestic source of rare earth materials. The facility is expected to ship its first commercial cargo to US clients later this month. The facility marks the first commercial-scale deployment of Cyclic's proprietary MagCycle technology globally, producing rare earth magnet materials as well as critical minerals such as copper, aluminum, and steel. More than 7,000 mt of retired materials have already arrived at the facility.
