[SMM Daily Brief Commentary on Coking Coal and Coke]

Coking coal market:

Low-sulphur coking coal in Linfen was quoted at 2,510 yuan/mt.

Coking coal side, three departments issued a document allowing compliant coal mines to produce at approved capacity before year-end. Driven by policies to stabilise production and ensure supply, coking coal supply is expected to increase. A small number of coal mines in Shanxi, Shaanxi, and Inner Mongolia resumed production, but progress fell short of expectations. Supply of coking coal and fat coal remained tight, and coking coal prices may stay in the doldrums in the short term.

Coke market:

The nationwide average price of quasi-first-grade metallurgical coke (CDQ) was 2,420 yuan/mt.

Supply side, coke producers have moved out of deep losses, with most entering a slight-loss phase and some turning losses into profits, boosting production enthusiasm. Meanwhile, shipments were smooth and inventory stayed at low levels. Demand side, steel mills’ hot metal production remained high, and most steel mills’ coke inventory was at low-to-mid levels, indicating pre-holiday restocking demand. However, steel companies are mired in losses; coupled with weak demand for finished steel products, expectations for production cuts at steel mills have risen. Steel mills continue to restock on an as-needed basis, resist high-priced coke, and the rigid-demand restocking and loss-driven pressure offset each other. Overall, pre-holiday rigid-demand restocking provided support for coke prices, but steel mill losses constrained any rise. With bullish and bearish factors intertwined, coke prices may remain temporarily stable in the short term. [SMM Steel]

[Domestic Iron Ore Brief] Iron ore prices in the Tangshan area are likely to remain in the doldrums
The domestic ore market in Tangshan remained stable, with the current ex-works price of 66% grade iron ore concentrates on a dry basis including tax at 940-950 yuan/mt. Concentrate producers are gradually fulfilling orders from steel mills, with a few holding prices steady through tenders from large mines. The low-grade market saw weak supply-demand conditions, making it difficult to find low-priced ore, while sellers also faced challenges in holding prices firm for shipments.

The most-traded HRC contract consolidated higher today, closing at 3,308, up 0.18% intraday. Spot prices mostly rose 5-10 yuan/mt, with some markets holding steady. In terms of supply, rolling line maintenance decreased MoM this week, leaving HRC supply relatively ample. Demand side, market transactions were average today, with no significant pre-holiday restocking demand released. Raw material side, pre-holiday restocking is nearing its end, but near-term hot metal rigid demand remains resilient, making a downward breakout in raw materials unlikely before the holiday, though post-holiday negative feedback risks warrant caution. Looking ahead, coke demand has recently seen continued news regarding supply guarantees and capacity releases. While the impact on sentiment is relatively smaller than last week, it still caps upside. Recent improvements in steel port departures and export order-taking will provide some support to steel prices. The most-traded HRC contract is expected to consolidate on a strong note in the near term. Watch for pre-holiday demand release.
