Tug-of-war Between Supply and Demand Continues, Magnesium Ingot Market Under Pressure as Peak Season Falls Through [SMM Magnesium Ingot Spot Express]

[Supply-Demand Tug-of-War Persists, Magnesium Ingot Market Under Pressure as Peak Season Falls Short] High magnesium ingot inventory combined with increased supply, while domestic and overseas demand remains weak. The September-October peak season failed to materialize. Despite cost support, price hike transmission is sluggish, and the overall market remains under pressure.

SMM Flash, September 18:

Today, mainstream quotations for 99.90% magnesium ingot in Fugu stood at 15,900-16,000 yuan/mt, and mainstream quotations for 99.80% magnesium ingot in Fugu stood at 15,800-15,900 yuan/mt. China FOB prices were reported at $2,250-2,350/mt.

The magnesium ingot market remained stable today. Supply side, overall inventory remained high, and supply continued to be ample, limiting upside room for prices. Although coal prices are expected to strengthen as the heating season approaches, this is unlikely to fully drive the market higher. After the earlier slight price spike, traders sold off concentrated positions to lock in profits and are now largely on the sidelines, no longer stockpiling. Demand side, end-use demand remained persistently weak, making it difficult for price increases to take hold, and upward momentum in the market was insufficient. In the short term, the magnesium ingot market is expected to continue consolidating.

Latrobe Magnesium Suspends Trading for Major Financing, Aiming to Boost Magnesium Production
【SMM Magnesium Flash】On September 18th, Latrobe Magnesium applied to the Australian Securities Exchange and received approval to suspend trading, pending a major financing announcement. The suspension will continue until the financing details are announced or trading resumes on September 22nd. This move indicates that the company is advancing substantial capital raising to provide financial support for its magnesium project construction. If the financing is successfully implemented, it is expected to accelerate the production process of its 50,000-ton annual magnesium plant in South Carolina, USA, and its demonstration plant in Australia, providing a new supply source for the western magnesium supply chain.

Cost-Inventory Game, Market Consolidates to Find Bottom [SMM Magnesium Weekly Data]
[Cost-Inventory Game, Market Consolidating to Find Bottom] This week, dolomite prices remained stable. Magnesium ingot prices, affected by coal and ferrosilicon, fell first and then rebounded slightly, but high social inventory kept supply pressure in place. Foreign trade FOB prices followed the domestic decline, overseas demand fell short of expectations, the September-October peak season failed to materialize, traders stayed on the sidelines, and downside was limited. Magnesium powder fluctuated with magnesium ingot, with only rigid-demand small orders. Although magnesium alloy smelting saw production cuts, inventory piled up, die-casting operations were weak, orders were insufficient, and processing fees were under pressure. End-use demand showed no improvement, and the magnesium market is expected to maintain a fluctuating trend in search of a bottom in the short term.

Magnesium Ingot Inventory Rises 1.59% Month-on-Month, Market Struggles with Weak Demand and High Shipping Costs
【SMM Magnesium Flash】This week, the social inventory of magnesium ingots increased by 1.59% month-on-month, leading to an overall increase in inventory pressure. At the beginning of the week, a wave of concentrated replenishment of just-needed inventory appeared in the market, briefly driving spot transactions to pick up. However, the effect of boosting the market was fleeting and failed to persist. On the one hand, magnesium producers are firm in their attitude towards price support, which to some extent dampens the enthusiasm of downstream purchasing. On the other hand, the actual demand from end-users is weak, and the market lacks sustained purchasing momentum. There is no significant improvement in foreign trade, and current transactions rely heavily on the delivery of existing orders from earlier periods, with no new large orders to support. Meanwhile, due to recent weather conditions, port shipment schedules are tight and shipping costs remain high, which has hindered the delivery of foreign trade orders and significantly slowed down the pace of export inventory reduction. It is difficult for on-site purchasing sources to quickly be transmitted and digested downstream and overseas, resulting in continuous backlog of supply. Ultimately, this has led to a significant accumulation of social inventory, especially port inventory, this week.
