[SMM Analysis] Bearish Factors Materialize, Sentiment Recovers, Supply Contracts Marginally, Stainless Steel Inventory Dips Slightly: SMM, September 17: This week, stainless steel social inventory reversed its earlier mild buildup trend, achieving a moderate overall destocking as the inventory midpoint edged lower, with peak-season inventory pressure easing marginally. Total inventory in the two core markets of Wuxi and Foshan pulled back slightly, declining from 926,200 mt on September 10, 2026 to 923,800 mt in the latest period, down 0.26% WoW, with inventory showing a steady destocking trend overall. This week, stainless steel market sentiment was initially subdued before recovering, as macro headwinds materialized and low-level restocking demand was released, jointly driving the mild inventory drawdown. Earlier in the week, before the US Fed rate hike landed, bearish macro sentiment weighed on the market, SS futures fell sharply, with the low briefly touching 13,290 yuan/mt, while the spot market was gripped by pessimism and wait-and-see sentiment, end-user transactions were sluggish overall, and the pace of inventory digestion slowed temporarily. Once the Fed rate hike landed, macro headwinds were largely priced in, and with futures prices pulling back to the lower end of the year's range, market cost-effectiveness became prominent, downstream and trader restocking demand at low levels gradually emerged, driving a phased recovery in spot transactions and effectively accelerating inventory digestion. Supply-side pressure also eased marginally, as stainless steel mill production schedules pulled back in September, the pace of industry supply release contracted, and futures warrant inventory continued to decline, further supporting the steady destocking of social inventory. SMM, September 17: This week, stainless steel social inventory ended the prior mild buildup trend, achieving overall moderate destocking, with the inventory midpoint edging lower and peak-season inventory pressure easing marginally. Total inventory in the two core markets of Wuxi and Foshan pulled back slightly, declining from 926,200 mt on September 10, 2026, to 923,800 mt in the latest period, down 0.26% WoW, with inventory showing a steady destocking trend overall.

This week, stainless steel market sentiment was initially subdued before firming, as macro headwinds materialized and low-level restocking demand was released, jointly driving mild inventory destocking. In the run-up to the US Fed rate hike during the week, bearish macro sentiment weighed on the market, SS futures fell sharply, with the low briefly touching 13,290 yuan/mt, the spot market was gripped by pessimistic wait-and-see sentiment, end-user transactions were sluggish overall, and the pace of cargo destocking slowed temporarily. Once the Fed rate hike landed, macro headwinds were largely exhausted, and with futures prices pulling back to the year's low range, market cost-effectiveness became prominent, downstream players and traders gradually showed low-level restocking demand, driving a phased recovery in spot transactions and effectively accelerating on-market cargo destocking. Supply-side pressure also eased marginally, as stainless steel mill production schedules pulled back in September, the pace of industry cargo release contracted, and futures warrant inventory continued to decline, further supporting steady destocking of social inventory.

Overall, the materialization of macro headwinds repairing market sentiment, the release of low-level restocking demand, the pullback in steel mill production schedules, and the continued destocking of warrants were the core drivers behind this week's slight pullback in stainless steel social inventory. At the current stage, peak-season rigid demand for stainless steel has not yet fully recovered, but phased restocking demand continues to be released under low-price support, effectively offsetting the prior pressure from weak transactions and driving moderate inventory destocking. In the short term, low-level support is emerging in the market, inventory buildup pressure is easing, and prices are likely to maintain a stable fluctuating trajectory.

Cochilco’s latest bulletin shows Chilean mine molybdenum output at 2,973.8 tonnes in July 2026, down 6.6% MoM and 28.9% YoY. Jan–Jul output fell 11.3% YoY to 21,811.0 tonnes. Codelco produced 1,075.4 tonnes in July, down 31.3%, while the Los Pelambres mine produced 645.1 tonnes, down 31.6%. SMM calculates that the two producers accounted for about 65% of the country’s YoY decline. The July contraction widened from the 7.7% H1 decline, indicating weaker Chilean supply at the start of Q3. Figures are provisional.

SMM learned that overseas mine production cuts, extreme weather in South America, and declining ore grades and recovery rates were intensively discussed during a recent industry association meeting. These concerns strengthened expectations of tighter overseas molybdenum supply, stimulated some buying and pushed molybdenum oxide prices to around $34/lb Mo. Supply-side expectations continue to support prices, while some mine production, grade and recovery issues may not improve materially until around 2028. China’s market also remains firm, but elevated prices are discouraging chasing. Well-funded buyers, low-inventory users and producers with firm orders continue to purchase as needed, while processors mainly restock to maintain production.

[SMM Stainless Steel Daily Review] SS futures stop falling and recover; steel mills hold prices firm amid weak demand pressure on stainless steel spot According to SMM on September 15, SS futures stopped falling and rebounded. Although prices dipped to 13,460 yuan/mt during the session, they recovered and rallied near the close. As of market close, the most-traded SS contract settled at 13,560 yuan/mt. In the spot market, although SS futures stopped falling and rebounded, spot prices at steel mills still showed inverted price spreads. Market sources reported that steel mills held meetings to discuss production cuts. Coupled with tight supply at some mills and restricted-price sales, spot prices remained stable for the time being. Downstream, however, remained cautious and on the sidelines due to weak demand, and spot market trading continued to be sluggish. SS futures most-traded contract. At 10:15 a.m., SS2610 was quoted at 13,505 yuan/mt, down 20 yuan/mt from the previous trading day. Spot premiums for 304/2B in Wuxi were in the range of 665-1,065 yuan/mt. In the spot market, the average price of Wuxi cold-rolled 201/2B coil was flat; cold-rolled raw-edge 304/2B coil, Wuxi average price was flat, Foshan average price was flat; Wuxi cold-rolled 316L/2B coil price was flat; hot-rolled 316L/NO.1 coil, Wuxi quotes were flat; cold-rolled 430/2B coil in both Wuxi and Foshan was flat. This week, stainless steel futures overall extended a low-level subdued consolidation pattern. Disappointing peak-season expectations dominated futures sentiment, and bearish sentiment in the market continued to build. The end-user recovery has yet to materialize, and market expectations for a rebound have completely fallen through. Pessimistic sentiment was released in a concentrated manner, dragging SS futures to continue hitting bottom, with prices briefly dipping to 1,368...
