[SMM Iron Ore] Lower freight and a firmer yuan narrow imported iron ore losses

Published: Sep 17, 2026 14:46

The average imported iron ore margin recovered from -13.18 yuan/mt to -3.97 yuan/mt this period, helped by lower Australian freight rates, a stronger yuan against the US dollar and softer seaborne premiums.

SMM survey data showed mill losses deepening and end-use demand still weak, prompting more blast furnace maintenance. As of 16 September, the blast furnace operating rate across 242 mills tracked by SMM stood at 88.93%, down 0.15 percentage point week on week. Average daily hot metal output at sample mills fell 3,700 mt to 2.3991 million mt. Some mills have begun pre-holiday restocking, however, and overall iron ore demand still lends support to prices.

Iron ore prices face resistance in both directions and are likely to stay range-bound in the near term. Imported margins are likely to remain negative until end-use demand improves.

Global steelmaker ArcelorMittal successfully restarted blast furnace A at its plant in Gijón, Spain, following a burst water pipe that caused a localized steam explosion on September 9, 2026. The company confirmed that the incident caused no damage to the blast furnace itself, and normal operations have resumed without impacting customer deliveries. Blast furnace B remained fully operational throughout the outage, minimizing disruptions to the site's primary ironmaking capacity.

The European Parliament formally adopted a position to extend the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) to downstream and finished steel and aluminum products. This legislative expansion aims to protect European automotive and manufacturing value chains from cheap foreign imports that bypass the primary steel carbon levy. The broader protective mandate is a direct response to accelerating deindustrialization threats across the continent's heavy

Sweden-based green steel producer Stegra announced on September 16, 2026, the selection of four shipping and logistics companies—ESL Shipping, Royal Wagenborg, Pangaea Logistics Solutions, and Clarksons—to manage its seaborne supply chain. The network will handle the transportation of incoming scrap and iron ore to the Boden plant, as well as the outgoing distribution of finished steel products across Europe. This maritime logistics integration complements Stegra's existing railway transport agreements to support its zero-carbon production targets.
