[Ukraine's metals industry contribution to GDP falls close to zero as Zaporizhstal chain breaks]

Published: Sep 16, 2026 17:30
Before Russia's full-scale invasion, the metals industry accounted for up to 7% of Ukraine's GDP; Metinvest Chief Operating Officer Oleksandr Myronenko told Forbes Ukraine the sector's contribution may now be close to zero. Of the group's Ukrainian mining assets, only the Central and Northern mining and processing plants still run, at about 50% of capacity, producing iron ore pellets and concentrate for export to the EU. The Southern plant is idle because seaports are effectively closed, and Inhulets has been shut since 2024 on high electricity prices. At Zaporizhstal, Russian strikes have broken the production chain; restoring damaged equipment would cost tens of millions of hryvnias, roughly 0.5-2 million USD. GMK Center estimates mining and metals fell from 10.3% of GDP in 2021 to 5.5% in 2025, after making up 15.2% of goods exports last year, worth 6.2 billion USD. Zaporizhstal halted fully after an 11 August ballistic missile strike; Ukraine's steel output halved in August and four more missiles hit the plant in September, causing critical damage.

Cochilco’s latest bulletin shows Chilean mine molybdenum output at 2,973.8 tonnes in July 2026, down 6.6% MoM and 28.9% YoY. Jan–Jul output fell 11.3% YoY to 21,811.0 tonnes. Codelco produced 1,075.4 tonnes in July, down 31.3%, while the Los Pelambres mine produced 645.1 tonnes, down 31.6%. SMM calculates that the two producers accounted for about 65% of the country’s YoY decline. The July contraction widened from the 7.7% H1 decline, indicating weaker Chilean supply at the start of Q3. Figures are provisional.

[India steel, cement emissions up 8% as power-sector CO2 flatlines for two years]
India's steel and cement emissions rose 8% y-o-y in H1 2026, together taking a 23% share of national CO2, even as power-sector emissions flatlined for a second year. Crude steel output grew 8% and cement 9%, aided by real-estate investment; steel consumption outpaced output, drawing down inventories, while margins stayed squeezed by costly imported coking coal and Hormuz-related freight. Clean energy covered all of the 7% (63TWh) rise in power demand over two years; coal-fired output was flat for the first time in over 50 years. To secure feedstock, India notified coking coal as a critical and strategic mineral in January, and miners and steelmakers plan new washeries for domestic blending. Jindal Steel already uses gasification syngas in steelmaking; India also targets 100 million tonnes of coal gasification capacity within four years.
