[SMM Computing Power Midday Review] 5090 Hong Kong prices see wider discounts, 4090 supply tightens

Published: Sep 16, 2026 11:36
Indices consolidated today. On September 16, the Hong Kong 5090 was quoted at $6,200 per unit, with the transaction discount widening from 1% to 3.2%–4.8%, more than tripling over two days. Actual transactions closed at around $5,900–$6,000, approaching the expected threshold. The divergence between quoted and transaction prices signals a potential peak, while yuan-denominated channels continued to follow the uptrend. In east China, 25 units of the 4090D were signed at an annual rate of 6,800 yuan, below the lower bound of the standard version. Supply is tightening, substitute specifications are filling the gap, and the floor for older models is rising. Perspectives among computing power participants are diverging, underscoring the need for a holistic view that integrates both computing power and electricity markets.

[Market Overview] The SMM computing power rental price index consolidated overall today, with quotes for all server models and regions remaining unchanged from the previous trading day. On the price collection side, consumer-grade cards showed two opposing signals: Hong Kong 5090 transactions weakened, with the discount range expanding more than twofold within two days; in east China, 4090D units were listed for rent at slightly lower prices, reflecting tightening supply of existing 4090 inventory.

[5090: Hong Kong Discounts Widen, Quotes and Transaction Prices Diverge at an Accelerating Pace] In the Hong Kong market, 5090 cards were quoted at $6,200 per unit, with closing deals becoming notably more difficult. On September 14, market participants reported that discounts of $50–100, or roughly 1%, were required; by September 16, the required discount had widened to $200–300, or 3.2%–4.8%, more than doubling within two days, while actual trading volume continued to decline over the same period. Based on the upper end of the discount range, actual transaction prices were approximately $5,900–6,000, approaching the $6,000 threshold anticipated on September 4. The accelerating divergence between quoted and executable prices is typically a leading signal of a peaking uptrend, while the yuan-denominated channel continued to follow the rally. The two markets have diverged, warranting caution over the lagged risk of price transmission.

[4090: Substitute Specs Fill the Gap, Bottom Rises for Older Models] In east China, 25 RTX 4090D complete units were listed for rent under annual contracts at 6,800 yuan per unit per month, 200–500 yuan below the lower end of the 7,000–7,300 yuan range collected by SMM for 4090 complete units. The lessor reported that liquidity for 4090 servers in the same region has declined and supply has become insufficient. The 4090D is a lower spec than the standard version, and its listing at a slightly lower price indicates that lessees have begun to accept substitute specs. Combined with earlier signs that 4090 resources had peaked and lessors refused to sell at low prices, the bottom of rental prices for older models is rising.

[SMM View] Market participants in the computing power sector have notably different areas of focus: data center developers concentrate on the availability and cost of energy and power infrastructure, server holders and distributors prioritize supply chain stability and delivery certainty, while rental buyers are concerned with deployment timelines and spec compatibility. With these fragmented perspectives, price signals are easily interpreted in conflicting ways—Hong Kong discounts versus yuan-denominated gains, and 4090D substitution versus tightening standard-version supply are all price projections of these differing viewpoints. SMM believes that, given the deep coupling of computing power and electricity, a holistic perspective encompassing both the computing power market and the power market is especially important. This is also the methodological foundation for SMM's parallel advancement of computing power price indices and electricity price research.

[SMM Computing Power Flash] South China 5090 eight-card machine quoted at 620,000, up 7% in four days
SMM has learned that the quoted price for a 5090 eight-card complete server in South China is 620,000 yuan per unit. Last Saturday, the same specification was quoted at 580,000 yuan, marking an increase of 40,000 yuan, or 6.9%, within four days. Compared with 550,000 yuan in late August, the cumulative increase is 70,000 yuan, or 12.7%. This batch is configured with dual 32-core processors, 512G memory, and 100G dual optical-port network cards, equipped with eight 32G turbo edition graphics cards. Calculated at 43,500 yuan per card, the eight cards total approximately 348,000 yuan, while the supporting components account for about 272,000 yuan, or 44%. SMM believes that the hardware-side price increase still needs to be observed, while the rental side is consolidating between 13,500 and 16,000 yuan.

[SMM Computing Power News] 5090 Hosting Investment Promotion Promises Annualized Returns Over 20%, Starting at 460,000 with Buyback Clause
SMM has learned that recently, computing power hosting investment promotion information has appeared on WeChat channels, using "investment attraction" rhetoric to solicit external funds to purchase computing power equipment and hand it over to operators for centralized hosting. The publicly quoted prices are divided into three tiers: the intelligent computing all-in-one machine is priced at 30,000 yuan per unit, with an additional service fee of about 7,000 yuan per unit, a one-year hosting contract, and an estimated daily return of over 100 yuan; the 5090 four-card complete machine is priced at 36,000 yuan per unit, with an additional onboarding fee of about 6,000 yuan per unit and a daily return of about 130 yuan; the GPU5090 complete machine is aimed at large clients, with a minimum investment of 460,000 yuan, a three-year hosting agreement, a promised annualized return of over 20%, and a monthly return of 11,500 yuan. After one year, investors may apply for repurchase at a price of around 410,000 yuan, while the principal difference is nominally returned in 12 installments of about 45,000 yuan per month. The fixed-return and repurchase guarantee design shifts the risks of asset depreciation and operations onto the investors.

[SMM Computing Power Flash] East China 4090D annual contract 6,800, 4090 supply tightening
SMM learned that 25 RTX4090D units in east China have been listed for rental, with an annual contract at a monthly rent of 6,800 yuan per unit per month. Compared with the 7,000–7,300 yuan range for RTX 4090 units collected by SMM, this deal sits at the lower end, 200–500 yuan lower. The lessor reported that liquidity of RTX 4090 servers in the same region has declined and supply is insufficient. SMM believes that the RTX 4090D, with specifications below the standard RTX 4090, is filling the gap at a slightly lower price, reflecting tightening inventory of existing RTX 4090 units and renters beginning to accept substitute specifications. Previously, RTX 4090 unit resources peaked and lessors refused to sell at low prices, and the rental price floor for older models is now rising.
