[SMM Steel] Turkish Rebar Rally Unstoppable: Tight Supply and Black Sea Disruptions Widen Mill Margins

Published: Sep 15, 2026 15:19
[Turkey] Supported by crude steel production controls and raw material supply concerns, Turkish rebar prices jumped again today to 625–630 USD/tonne EXW (excluding VAT), bringing the cumulative increase over the past two weeks to 30 USD/tonne. Over the same period, imported scrap (HMS 1/2 80:20) edged up only slightly to 395 USD/tonne CFR, allowing the rebar-scrap spread and mill profit margins to widen further. Regionally, an Iskenderun mill rapidly hiked its offer to 630–635 USD/tonne EXW after closing 5,000–10,000 tonnes at 625 USD/tonne. Mainstream ex-works quotes in the Marmara region escalated to 635–650 USD/tonne EXW, with isolated prompt-delivery spot transactions reaching as high as 660 USD/tonne EXW. Izmir mills maintained their ex-works prices at 620–625 USD/tonne EXW. Although downstream end-users are bearing heavy cost pressures, market procurement sentiment has been effectively stimulated by multiple supply-side bullish factors, including mill production limits, firmer scrap prices, and disrupted Black Sea steel billet supplies. In contrast, the export market remains subdued; the domestic surge has pushed mill export offers far beyond the acceptance levels of overseas seaborne buyers, with the Turkish rebar export assessment following the uptrend to reach 605 USD/tonne FOB.

[SMM Steel] Decline in Indonesian Billet Prices
[Indonesia] Yesterday, prices rose by about 5 USD/metric ton but have now fallen again by 5 USD/metric ton to 480 USD/metric ton. This is due to falling Chinese steel prices—one of the main drivers of Indonesian steel prices. To ensure that Indonesian billet offers remain competitive, producers are willing to lower their prices in line with movements in Chinese steel product prices. This also means that market trends have become clear again after mills raised their prices—a move that turned out to be a mistake; at least now it’s clear which direction the market is heading. If Chinese steel prices continue to fall this week, Indonesian billet prices may drop even further; however, for export prices, we may see the impact on freight costs as global oil and gas prices are currently surging.

[Metinvest's Zaporizhstal Struck by Missiles for Third Time in a Month]
Ukrainian steelmaker Zaporizhstal, part of Metinvest Group, was hit by four ballistic missiles on the night of September 12, sustaining critical damage to its blast furnace and open-hearth sections, power systems, and logistics infrastructure, with four employees injured. Production at the plant had not resumed following two earlier attacks on August 11 and 27, meaning no technological emergency risk existed at the time of the strike. Metinvest COO Oleksandr Myronenko said the plant is a civilian facility producing pig iron and steel, noting that damage has worsened with each successive attack.
