Cost expectations weaken, magnesium ingot market prices fall rapidly [SMM Magnesium Ingot Spot Express]

Published: Sep 9, 2026 17:56
[Weakening cost expectations drive magnesium ingot prices sharply lower] The magnesium ingot market ended its brief shot up today, with prices drifting lower. Pullbacks in coal and ferrosilicon cooled expectations for cost support, and under high inventory and capital pressure, smelters rushed to offer low-priced spot magnesium. Downstream demand was already weak, and combined with wild swings in the market, confidence is lacking and wait-and-see sentiment is strong. Magnesium producers' pricing strategies will dominate the futures market going forward, and the market is expected to remain under pressure in the short term.

SMM September 9 news flash:

Today, mainstream quotations for national standard 99.90% magnesium ingot in Fugu stood at 15,900-16,000 yuan/mt, and mainstream quotations for national standard 99.80% magnesium ingot in Fugu stood at 15,900-16,000 yuan/mt; China FOB prices were reported at $2,280-2,380/mt.

The magnesium ingot market drifted lower today, as the earlier brief shot-up came to an end and prices pulled back quickly. On the raw material side, coal and ferrosilicon turned downward after their earlier rapid gains, quickly cooling expectations of stronger cost support and further fueling bearish sentiment. On the supply side, this round of price increases did not improve order-taking at magnesium plants. Downstream buyers and traders showed low acceptance of high-priced cargoes. Under inventory and capital pressure, mainstream smelters began to proactively lower quotations and release low-priced spot cargoes, accelerating the decline in magnesium prices and rapidly reversing market sentiment. On the demand side, order volumes were already thin, and combined with wild price swings, downstream clients lacked confidence and generally chose to wait and see, abandoning stockpiling and further suppressing any market recovery. The key focus going forward will be on magnesium producers' pricing strategies and actual selling behavior. The sustainability of producers holding prices firm or cutting prices will dominate the direction of futures. In the short term, the magnesium ingot market is expected to remain weak and under pressure.

Australian LMG Appoints New CEO, Aims to Diversify Global Magnesium Supply Chain
【SMM Magnesium Flash】 Recently, Latrobe Magnesium (LMG) of Australia announced that Robert Stein will officially assume the position of CEO on October 1st. He pointed out that there is a huge gap in independent primary magnesium supply outside China, with China accounting for about 90% of global production. Magnesium has been listed as a critical mineral by many countries. As one of the few advanced independent primary magnesium projects overseas, LMG adopts a patented hydrometallurgical process to extract high-purity magnesium oxide from brown coal ash and has secured an exclusive distribution agreement with a US distributor and support from Australian and US financial institutions. It will then comprehensively review its financial and commercialization paths, which is expected to accelerate project implementation and provide new options for diversifying the western magnesium supply chain.
