[SMM Steel] Billet prices in Indonesia remain stable, but shipments are experiencing delays

Published: Sep 8, 2026 15:06
[Indonesia] Billet prices are currently stable at around 480 USD/metric ton FOB. The situation is similar for other products, whose prices have also remained stable. This is due to the absence of any significant factors or variables capable of triggering price changes. Buyers are still waiting to see how the situation develops, while no steel mills have lowered their prices yet, as raw material costs may be hindering such a move. The only change is a water shortage in Indonesia, which may now be affecting logistics, as there are reports that this is causing shipment delays until December. This is likely to become a strategy used by steel mills to attract customers, as it is unlikely they will raise prices again given that market prices are already considered high. If the situation worsens, export freight costs will rise, which will inevitably lead to an increase in FOB prices, or the delivery will be postponed again.

[ Mineral Resources' Onslow Iron Sustains 35 Million Tonne Capacity ]
Australian mining firm Mineral Resources (MinRes) reported on September 7, 2026, that its Mining Services division achieved a record annual production volume of 341 million tonnes for FY26, up 22% year-on-year. The massive volume growth was heavily driven by the successful ramp-up of the Onslow Iron project, which hit and sustained its nameplate capacity of 35 million tonnes per annum. The Onslow project alone shipped a total of 34.1 million tonnes for the period, establishing a critical new supply chain in the Pilbara region.

[ Canada Imposes 50% Retaliatory Tariffs on US Steel and Aluminum ]
The Canadian government officially imposed 50% retaliatory tariffs on US steel and aluminum imports, effective September 8, 2026. The countermeasures cover approximately C$27.6 billion in imports, applying double duties to over 300 US metal products and derivatives. Canada typically sources 42.9% of its steel and iron imports from the United States, meaning the trade dispute will severely inflate near-term procurement costs for regional fabricators and mining developers.
