[Formosa Ha Tinh halts furnace on hot stove fault, hitting some 200k mt of monthly hot metal]

Vietnam's Formosa Ha Tinh Steel has taken a blast furnace off line on an emergency basis following a fault in its hot stove, according to market sources. The incident was caused by a fire spreading from a neighbouring site, with no fault found in the blast furnace itself. Formosa Ha Tinh produced around 5 million mt in 2025; based on a single-furnace outage, the shutdown is expected to affect roughly 200,000 mt of hot metal output on a monthly basis. A restart date has yet to be confirmed.

Hoa Phat offered hot-rolled coil at around $542/mt on Thursday, some $5/mt below market expectations, reflecting soft domestic demand. The outage is set to tighten local flat steel supply further and push up import prices in Vietnam, which could indirectly strengthen the bargaining position of Chinese material.

However, steel mills—taking production costs into account—are generally quoting at relatively high levels, making deals difficult to conclude.
