  • HRC export schedule: September HRC export plan at steel mills up 5.63% MoM

This month, the planned HRC export volume is 1.072 million mt, up 57,100 mt or 5.63% MoM from actual exports last month. The increase in steel mill export plans was mainly driven by domestic export prices bottoming out in August, coupled with some upward movement in overseas prices, prompting some overseas buyers with rigid demand to make purchases, such as in the Middle East and Turkey. The rise in Turkish demand was mainly driven by a supply gap in Russian sources, leading to a shift in procurement flows. However, some steel mills also noted that current volumes are mostly planned exports, as Southeast Asian demand has not fully recovered, and actual exports may be limited. In terms of new orders, after mid-August, both domestic and overseas prices were raised, and some previously hesitant orders began to be placed, with flows concentrated in Europe, the Middle East, and India. Overall, as export prices rise and stabilize, combined with a gradual recovery in demand, exports of sheets & plates may improve.

"Cheong Wa Dae Denies Reports of Decision to Send Troops to Strait of Hormuz, Citing Ongoing Consultations"
According to Yonhap News Agency and other media reports, South Korea's presidential office Cheong Wa Dae denied on September 3 media reports that "the South Korean government has basically decided to send troops to the Strait of Hormuz." Reports said a South Korean media outlet reported earlier that day that the South Korean government had basically decided to send troops to the Strait of Hormuz and was reviewing a plan to submit a proposal for parliamentary consent to the deployment. Reports said Cheong Wa Dae issued a statement that day saying the relevant reports were inconsistent with the facts and that the matter had not yet been decided. Cheong Wa Dae said South Korea has always maintained close communication with the international community to promote the early restoration of freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and maintain peace and stability in the Middle East. The reports noted that US President Trump has repeatedly criticized South Korea for refusing requests to send troops to the Strait of Hormuz to help ensure the security of the strait, saying South Korean President Lee Jae-myung once responded "no, thank you" to his request for South Korea to join US military action against Iran.

SNT Energy announced on 2 September that it had signed a contract with Korea South-East Power Co., Ltd. to supply heat recovery steam generators for the Hadong LNG combined-cycle power plant. The contract is valued at approximately KRW 128.2 billion and runs from September 2026 to December 2029. SNT Energy will form a consortium with Doosan Enerbility and will be responsible for supplying the heat recovery steam generators, a core component of the combined-cycle plant. The project is intended to replace the aging Hadong coal-fired Units 2 and 3 with a new high-efficiency LNG combined-cycle power plant, but their formal retirement date, the commissioning date of the new gas-fired plant, current coal consumption, or the volume of coal demand expected to be displaced is not being disclosed yet.
