The plant produces magnesium products from lignite fly ash solid waste resources and has already achieved stable output of high-purity magnesium oxide, securing prepayments from US enterprises to lock in future product sales. The project plans to begin phased commissioning and still expects to produce its first magnesium metal in H2 2026, aligning with Australia's domestic critical minerals supply strategy. At this stage, only the demonstration project is progressing smoothly, while the large-scale commercial production line still requires financing and regulatory approvals, with no effective supply growth formed yet.

Latrobe Magnesium (ASX:LMG) announced on September 1 that construction of its Stage 1B magnesium demonstration plant in Victoria's Latrobe Valley, Australia, has reached 70% completion, with overall project construction accelerating and the project officially entering the final sprint toward commissioning. The project's core briquetting equipment has completed full-process installation and on-site acceptance testing, ready to begin phased commissioning at any time, while electrical systems, briquetting, and quicklime feeding auxiliary works are progressing steadily in tandem. Construction of the core reduction furnace area has advanced significantly, with key equipment including exhaust stacks and combustion piping all delivered and in place, and vacuum, noise reduction, and main support structures essentially completed. The project's safety compliance rate has exceeded 98% throughout, with no major safety incidents, and construction quality and schedule remain under control.

The project employs a proprietary process that utilizes fly ash solid waste from brown coal power plants to produce magnesium-based products, and has already achieved stable mass production of high-purity magnesium oxide, with mature front-end production capability in place. On the overseas cooperation front, leading US distributor Metal Exchange LLC has paid a $2 million prepayment to secure offtake rights for future magnesium ingot output from the plant, with downstream channels essentially locked in. The company plans to commence phased commissioning in the next reporting cycle, targeting first primary magnesium metal output in H2 2026. At this stage, the demonstration line is progressing smoothly, but the commercial-scale plant of 10kt capacity still requires financing and regulatory approvals, and will need further validation across technology, capital, and policy dimensions. In the near term, it can only contribute small-batch incremental magnesium supply outside China, with a longer timeline still required for scaled capacity release.

Magnesium ingot prices shot up during the week, driven by rising coal and ferrosilicon costs, coupled with some restocking at higher prices in foreign trade. However, the overall market remained characterized by strong supply and weak demand, with sluggish transactions at high prices and signs of a pullback emerging in the latter part of the week. Overseas demand has not shown any substantial recovery, with market activity dominated by tentative inquiries, limited actual order volumes, and evident buyer pressure for lower prices, keeping trading sluggish. Downstream magnesium powder and magnesium alloy prices followed the cost-driven increase in magnesium ingot, but end-use demand for magnesium powder remained weak, with some enterprises cutting production or suspending operations, exports constrained, and inventory levels rising. Spot inventory of magnesium alloy was ample, competition among peers was intense, and die-casting enterprises faced insufficient orders and declining operating rates, keeping processing fees under pressure. In the short term, cost support and weak demand are locked in a tug-of-war, and the upward momentum in magnesium prices is losing steam, with the market likely to return to consolidation. Going forward, close attention should be paid to the release of domestic and overseas orders.

Under the support of costs, domestic magnesium ingot prices continued to rise this week. Driven by the mentality of "buying when prices rise and not buying when prices fall" and some demand for delivery documents, traders made a small amount of stockpiling and follow-up purchases. However, after the price surge, market transactions significantly weakened, and downstream fear of high prices gradually became prominent. Currently, there has been no substantial recovery in terminal demand at home and abroad. Some traders store purchased goods in port warehouses for delivery documents and to cope with market fluctuations, while most traders choose to remain on the sidelines. Even though there is strong support from the cost side and expectations of price increases in the market, the willingness to make new purchases remains limited.
