The negotiations impact over 10,000 workers across North American flat-rolled steel facilities and iron ore mining operations. The temporary pact averts an immediate strike over healthcare costs that would severely disrupt domestic flat steel supply while Nippon Steel's $15 billion acquisition remains pending.
