Rising production costs push up magnesium ingot prices, while sluggish demand limits rebound [SMM Magnesium Ingot Spot Express]

[Rising magnesium ingot production costs push up prices, sluggish demand constrains rebound] Fugu magnesium ingot offers in both domestic and overseas markets rose along with higher costs, but end-use demand in China and outside China failed to follow through, limiting upward momentum. In the short term, magnesium ingot prices are expected to continue moving sideways within a range, with attention on downstream restocking and production cuts by producers.

SMM, September 1:

Today, mainstream quotations for GB 99.90% magnesium ingot in Fugu stood at 16,050-16,150 yuan/mt, and mainstream quotations for GB 99.80% magnesium ingot in Fugu stood at 16,000-16,100 yuan/mt. China FOB prices were reported at $2,270-2,370/mt.

Today, mainstream quotations for magnesium ingot in China stood at 16,000-16,100 yuan/mt. Transactions at the lower end were moderate, but follow-through at higher prices lacked momentum, with most actual deals concentrated at relatively low levels. Foreign trade FOB prices edged up in tandem to $2,270-2,370/mt. The current rise in both domestic and overseas prices was driven mainly by cost support from higher raw material prices. Smelters, squeezed by losses, showed a strong willingness to hold prices firm and proactively raised their quotations, rather than any substantive recovery in end-use demand. Overall demand remains weak. Downstream buyers in China are cautious, with pronounced wait-and-see sentiment. Traders are mostly offloading at lower prices and have made no moves to restock. Markets outside China are limited to small volumes of just-in-time procurement, with no increase in new orders. Scattered inquiries show clear pressure to push for lower prices, and actual foreign trade transactions remain weak. At this stage, the market is locked in a tug-of-war between cost-driven price support and weak demand follow-through. Prices lack upward momentum and room to shot up is limited. In the short term, magnesium prices are likely to continue moving sideways within a narrow range. Going forward, attention should focus on the pace of downstream restocking and production cuts at smelters.

【SMM Magnesium Flash】Recently, the Defense Industrial Base Alliance under the U.S. Department of Defense issued a special solicitation notice, openly soliciting key mineral investment plans from domestic producers, with a focus on filling the domestic production and supply gaps for four types of metals: indium, manganese, magnesium, and titanium. The deadline for submission of plans is September 17th. This solicitation covers the entire chain of mining, processing, refining, alloy smelting, and resource recovery, with all four types of metals listed in the U.S. critical minerals inventory. This move is expected to provide financial and policy support for the domestic production capacity construction of key defense materials such as magnesium and titanium.

[Costs Provide a Floor and Keep Magnesium Prices Firm; Domestic and Overseas Demand Limits Upside Room] Today, domestic offers for magnesium ingot in Fugu were 15,900-16,000 yuan/mt, and FOB offers were $2,250-$2,350/mt. Rising coal and ferrosilicon prices raised costs and kept prices firm. However, demand in China and overseas was weak, and overseas market gains were merely transmitted from the domestic market, leaving magnesium ingot in a tug-of-war between cost support and demand pressure.

【SMM Magnesium Express】On August 27, the starting auction price of Hongliulin lump coal, a raw material for blue carbon, stood at 800 yuan/ton, up 20 yuan/ton from the previous period; the auction volume was 77,500 tons, down 13,500 tons from the previous period; the average transaction price was 896 yuan/ton, up 80.82 yuan/ton from the average price of the previous period. The lowest auction price today is 894 yuan/ton, and the highest price is 902 yuan/ton. As the core raw material for primary magnesium smelting, the rising price of coal directly pushes up the production cost of primary magnesium manufacturers, creating strong cost-side support. Affected by this, smelting manufacturers have a strong reluctance to sell, and the quotation of magnesium ingots has been raised to 15,800-15,900 yuan/ton, an increase of 50 yuan/ton from earlier.
