Market Sentiment Recovers, Central China Rebar and Wire Rod Supply Edges Up Slightly

Published: Sep 1, 2026 15:42
During the survey period (August 25-August 31), the operating rate of rebar rolling lines in Central China remained flat, the capacity utilization rate edged up, and wire rod supply remained stable.
During the survey period (August 25-August 31), the operating rate of rebar rolling lines in the region remained flat, while the capacity utilization rate edged up. Specifically, production at some steel mills in Henan increased slightly. On one hand, driven by the recent price rally, mills showed improved willingness to produce construction steel; on the other hand, coil shipments were weak, and some hot metal was redirected back to rebar production. A steel mill in Hunan underwent brief maintenance in the previous period and resumed normal production this period, with its rebar rolling line capacity utilization rate edging up. In terms of mill inventories, they remained stable this period, mainly because inventories at some mills in Hunan increased due to production resumptions, while some mills in Henan saw improved shipments amid the price rally. The combined effect kept mill inventories stable. Rebar supply is expected to see growth potential next period, mainly as EAF steel mills in Henan see improved margins and plan to increase production.

During the survey period (August 25-August 31), blast furnace steel mills saw limited improvement in margins, with insufficient willingness to produce wire rod, keeping supply stable. Specifically, on the mill inventory side, driven by the price rally, market sentiment clearly recovered, and speculative purchase demand from agents increased, causing mill inventories to shift from rising to falling. Driven by the surge in spot prices, some EAF steel mills saw improved margins and plan to increase production, with wire rod supply expected to see growth next period.

[SMM Steel] India Domestic HRC Rises; Sellers Seek Higher Export Levels for Europe and Vietnam
[India Export] Indian HRC sellers were heard seeking around 660USD/tonne CFR Europe and 530USD/tonne CFR Vietnam. Market participants said India’s EU quota was effectively full after accounting for material already en route and cargoes held at customs warehouses in the EU. They therefore expect Indian HRC cargoes shipped in late October or November to be positioned for January customs clearance and believe these later shipments could secure stronger prices. The Southeast Asian market is meanwhile awaiting price revisions from major Vietnamese mills, which will provide the next direction for regional HRC offers. In the domestic market, HRC prices increased by around 26USD/tonne (2,500INR/tonne) to approximately 630USD/tonne (60,000INR/tonne) EXW Mumbai. IMD’s normal calendar places the beginning of southwest monsoon withdrawal from northwest India around September 17. Market participants expect steel demand to strengthen as the monsoon recedes and the festive season begins, supporting a pickup in construction and infrastructure activity.

[Indonesia] Billet is increased 2 USD/ton, now at 477 USD/ton FOB. This is because that the price is already consider expensive at the market so the buyer will think twice, however right now some info that there are a lot of buyers do some long position because globally the price of cooking coal seems increase, so the buyer tries to buy a lot today worry that the price could go up. That’s why the demand is increasing and the mills happy to increase the price. If the demand is really rising up for the next days and consistently rising up the price will also go higher once more.
