[SMM Steel] Alang Ship-Recycling Market Improves on Higher Prices

[India Domestic] Alang's ship-recycling market remained active in the last week of August supported mainly by higher-value and specialized vessels. Alang 8Ani (12mm) plate prices increased by 11.53USD/tonne (1,100INR/tonne) from 429.68USD/tonne (41,000INR/tonne) to 441.21USD/tonne (42,100INR/tonne) ex-yard Alang during the week, while the rupee also strengthened slightly against the US dollar. Although India remains less competitive than Pakistan and Bangladesh for standard vessels, improving prices and steady arrivals of specialized ships indicate better market conditions for Alang. Compared with Friday, Melting scrap prices up by 9.43USD/tonne (900INR/tonne) to 378.33USD/tonne (36,100INR/tonne) and HMS attachment prices rose by 9.43USD/tonne (900INR/tonne) to 399.29USD/tonne (38,100INR/tonne) ex-yard Alang.

[SMM Analysis: Global Copper Scrap Policies Set to Converge in 2027: How Will Trade Flows Be Reshaped?] Global copper scrap trade may tighten in 2027 as the EU restricts shipments to unapproved non-OECD markets, the US considers retaining high-grade scrap, and Asian countries strengthen import and export controls. SMM expects compliant supply to shrink, competition for clean material to intensify, and higher audit, testing and traceability costs to support prices and widen regional gaps.
