[SMM Analysis] Futures Broke Key Support and Fell, Peak-Season Warm-Up Fell Through; Stainless Steel Inventory Continued a Mild Buildup SMM News on August 27: This week, stainless steel social inventory continued to build up, with the inventory midpoint moving further higher and pressure from piled-up market supply steadily increasing. Total inventory in the two core markets of Wuxi and Foshan rose further, from 925,100 mt on August 20, 2026 to 927,300 mt in the latest period, up 0.24% WoW. The pace of inventory buildup persisted, and industry-wide inventory pressure continued to intensify. This week, expectations for a peak-season recovery in the stainless steel market fell through completely, and persistently weak end-use demand was the core driver of the inventory buildup. Entering late August, the market’s traditional September-October peak season stock-up-in-advance cycle did not materialize; the lack of recovery in rigid end-use demand, together with a further dip in SS futures during the week that effectively broke below the key support level of 14,000 yuan/mt, kept market pessimism fermenting. Wait-and-see sentiment among downstream players and traders intensified, spot purchase transactions remained sluggish, and the efficiency of supply digestion stayed low. Supply-side pressure also increased in tandem: steel mills’ production schedule rebounded somewhat this month, overall supply releases remained ample, and with steel mills facing relatively heavy pressure to draw down their own inventory, willingness to sell was strong. Supply at the circulation end continued to be released, pushing social inventory to accumulate steadily. Overall, the key reasons stainless steel inventory continued to build up this week were that weakening futures after breaking key levels undermined market confidence, pre-peak-season demand was absent, and terminal transactions remained depressed; high production schedules at steel mills, coupled with proactive selling, further amplified inventory pressure. At present, weak stainless steel fundamentals continued to dominate the market, and short-term demand…

SMM reported on August 27 that stainless steel social inventory continued to build up this week, with the inventory midpoint moving further higher and pressure from piled-up market supply steadily increasing. Total inventory in the two core markets of Wuxi and Foshan rose further, increasing from 925,100 mt on August 20, 2026 to 927,300 mt in the latest period, up 0.24% WoW. The pace of inventory buildup persisted, and industry-wide inventory pressure continued to intensify.

This week, expectations for a peak-season recovery in the stainless steel market completely fell through, with persistently weak end-use demand being the core driver of the inventory buildup. Entering late August, the market’s traditional September-October peak season stock-up-in-advance demand failed to materialize, and the recovery in rigid end-use demand was absent. Meanwhile, SS futures moved further lower during the week and effectively broke below the key support level of 14,000 yuan/mt. Market pessimism continued to ferment, wait-and-see sentiment among downstream players and traders intensified, spot purchase transactions remained sluggish, and the efficiency of supply digestion stayed at a low level. Supply-side pressure also rose in tandem. Steel mills’ production schedules rebounded somewhat this month, overall supply releases remained ample, and, coupled with relatively heavy pressure to draw down steel mills’ own inventories, willingness to sell was strong. Supply in circulation continued to be released, driving a steady accumulation in social inventory. Overall, the key reasons stainless steel inventory continued to build up this week were the breakdown and weakening of futures undermining market confidence, the absence of pre-peak-season demand, and persistently sluggish end-use transactions. Steel mills’ high production schedules, together with proactive selling, further amplified inventory pressure. At present, weak stainless steel fundamentals continued to dominate the market, and there were no clear signs of a near-term demand repair. Under the mismatch of steadily released supply and persistently weak demand, the subsequent trend of social inventory buildup may continue, and inventory pressure still has further upside room.

[SMM Stainless Steel Daily Review] Peak-Season Recovery Expectations Fell Through; Stainless Steel Futures and Spot Both Weakened Under Pressure According to an SMM report on August 28, SS futures extended the previous weak trend, generally consolidating at lows and fluctuating around 14,000 yuan/mt intraday. The low dipped to 13,915 yuan/mt. By the close, the most-traded SS contract finally settled at 14,225 yuan/mt. In the spot market, dragged down by the continued decline in SS futures, coupled with peak-season demand recovery expectations falling through, demand remained weak and destocking pressure kept mounting, sending stainless steel spot prices further lower in tandem. The most-traded SS futures contract. At 10:15 a.m., SS2610 was quoted at 13,985 yuan/mt, down 85 yuan/mt from the previous trading day. Spot premiums for 304/2B in Wuxi were in the 485-885 yuan/mt range. In the spot market, the average price of Wuxi cold-rolled 201/2B coils was unchanged; for cold-rolled 304/2B coils with mill edges, the Wuxi average fell 50 yuan/mt and the Foshan average fell 50 yuan/mt; prices of cold-rolled 316L/2B coils in Wuxi were unchanged; for hot-rolled 316L/NO.1 coils, Wuxi quotes were unchanged; cold-rolled 430/2B coils in both Wuxi and Foshan were unchanged. This week, stainless steel futures generally showed a weak breakdown trend, with volatility intensifying and the center continuing to move lower. Futures were overall in the doldrums during the week. Mid-week, a sudden safety incident at a nickel iron smelting production line in east China lifted market sentiment over supply concerns, briefly driving SS futures to shot up and rebound, but the bullish impact lacked persistence and the market’s core bearish logic remained unchanged…

[SMM Stainless Steel Daily Review] SS Falls Below 14,000 Threshold; Weak Downstream Demand Causes Simultaneous Weakness in Stainless Steel Futures and Spot According to SMM, August 27, SS futures fell further. This safety incident had limited impact on the market. SS continued the previous downtrend, with the intraday trend remaining weak, breaking below the key threshold of 14,000 yuan/mt intraday. At the close, the most-traded SS contract settled at 14,225 yuan/mt. In the spot market, driven by the weak SS futures and combined with persistently sluggish end-use demand, the market's prior expectations of a recovery ahead of the "September peak season" were completely dashed, and stainless steel spot prices remained in the doldrums. Most-traded SS futures: At 10:15 a.m., SS2610 was at 14,070 yuan/mt, down 200 yuan/mt from the previous trading day. Spot premiums for 304/2B in Wuxi were in the range of 500-800 yuan/mt. This week, stainless steel futures overall consolidated at lows. Earlier, hit by the news of increased Indonesian RKAB nickel ore quotas, SS futures plunged, pulling the overall market valuation back to a lower range. This week, driven by the overall recovery of nonferrous metals, futures staged a staged recovery...
