I. Standards First: World’s First International Standard for Solid‑State Batteries Takes Shape
The most significant event of the week occurred on August 21, when China‑led proposal Guide for application, test items and conditions of solid‑state batteries for electric vehicle traction was officially approved at the IEC. This is the first global international standard for solid‑state batteries, developed with participation from experts in France, Japan, South Korea, and other countries. The standard will clarify testing protocols and provide a unified benchmark for automakers worldwide. 2026 is increasingly seen as the critical inflection point where pilot lines and vehicle validation begin to converge.
II. Headline Players Accelerate: 500Wh/kg Becomes the Benchmark
Geely Holding disclosed on August 21 (via LinkedIn) that its next‑generation all‑solid‑state battery targets 500Wh/kg energy density, with diesel‑comparable range and minute‑level charging. Its battery operations have started physical validation this year, and the company plans cross‑brand pilot deployments in 2027. This aligns with the industry consensus that 2027 is the target year for all‑solid‑state battery vehicle integration. Meanwhile, Easpring (Dangsheng Technology) confirmed on August 27 that it has built a complete material system covering solid‑state cathodes, solid electrolytes, and interfacial layers. Products have been supplied to leading solid‑state battery customers including QingTao, Weilan, Huineng, Ganfeng Lithium, and Zhongqi Xinneng. Specifically, all‑solid‑state cathode materials have cumulatively shipped 50 tonnes, solid‑liquid cathode materials have reached thousand‑tonne shipments, and dual‑phase composite solid‑state cathodes are now stably shipping over 100 tonnes per month.
III. Materials Front: Tianci’s Pilot Line Ready, Jinshiyu and ZD Power Push Forward
Tianci Materials announced on August 23 that its hundred‑tonne‑scale pilot line for lithium sulfide and solid‑state electrolytes has been completed and entered trial production in Q3. Lithium sulfide is a key precursor for sulfide‑based solid electrolytes. In addition, Jinlongyu (002882) reported on August 21 that its 20Ah all‑solid‑state pouch cell has passed third‑party performance tests, achieving 400Wh/kg, and its Huidong material base is expected to commence partial production by end‑2026, while a 2GWh cell plant in Shenzhen Dapeng has started preparation. ZD Power (300686) disclosed a strategic layout in solid‑state battery materials, including plans for a 5,000‑tonne/year high‑purity lithium sulfide production base.
IV. Financing, Safety, and the Unseen Threat
Saike Power completed a several‑hundred‑million‑yuan financing round on August 26, led by Saike Investment and CICC Capital, to expand sulfide electrolyte, high‑safety cell, and all‑solid‑state pilot production lines, as well as to advance R&D in material systems, solid‑solid interfaces, cycle life, and continuous manufacturing processes. On the safety front, GaoNeng ShuZao announced on August 25 that its 20Ah sulfide all‑solid‑state cell (GSS‑20) passed a nail penetration test at a CNAS‑accredited lab, using a 4mm steel needle (stricter than the military standard’s 3mm upper limit) and observing for 1 hour with zero thermal runaway. The test is notable for combining the most challenging sulfide route, a large 20Ah capacity, and a more stringent needle size – demonstrating that engineering solutions through “equipment + process” integration can overcome key manufacturing pain points.
However, a sobering academic reminder came on August 24: Professor Sun Xueliang’s team (Ningbo Eastern University of Technology, collaborating with Xi’an Jiaotong and Zhejiang University) published in Nature Energy, systematically revealing that the electronic conductivity of current mainstream inorganic solid electrolytes is typically in the range of 10⁻⁸–10⁻⁹ S/cm – 6 to 7 orders of magnitude higher than that of commercial polymer separators (10⁻¹⁵–10⁻¹⁸ S/cm). More strikingly, when electrolyte thickness is reduced from the lab‑typical 1000μm to the practically required 20μm, the capacity loss after 1 month of storage soars from 3.9% to 94.5%. To match the self‑discharge rate of commercial Li‑ion batteries (<2.5% per month), the electronic conductivity must drop to about 10⁻¹² S/cm – a level that none of the current mainstream materials have achieved. “Energy density can go high, but self‑discharge may undermine it all” – this could be the most underestimated “grey rhino” facing solid‑state battery commercialization.
