Ontario Premier Threatens to Cut US Electricity, Minerals Over Tariffs

Published: Aug 28, 2026 10:24
According to foreign media reports, Ontario Premier Doug Ford threatened to cut off electricity and critical minerals supplies to the US in response to the US threat to impose new tariffs on Canadian automobiles and steel. In an interview with the Associated Press, Ford said that if the trade war with the US escalated, he would cut off Ontario’s exports of electricity and critical minerals to the US. About 6% of electricity used in the US state of Michigan comes from Ontario. Four cross-border transmission lines connect Michigan and Ontario, with a total transmission capacity of 2,000 megawatts (MW).
