[SMM Flash] Tharisa Plc’s Zimbabwean unit has signed a five-year offtake agreement with Valterra Platinum for the sale of platinum concentrate from the Karo Platinum Project, ahead of first production expected in 2027. The agreement provides offtake certainty as Tharisa advances the project, which is targeting approximately 226,000 ounces of PGMs annually during Phase 1. Valterra operates the nearby Unki mine and smelter, located roughly 200 km from Karo, providing a strategically positioned processing partner for the new operation.
The agreement follows Karo’s 25-year Special Mining Lease signed with the Zimbabwean government on August 24, marking another significant step towards project development. Karo is expected to add to Zimbabwe’s growing PGM production base, where existing producers largely smelt concentrates domestically before shipping matte to South Africa for final refining. The offtake deal strengthens the commercial foundations of Karo while potentially increasing Zimbabwe’s role in regional PGM supply and supporting Valterra’s integrated smelting and refining network.
