Raw material side, lithium carbonate and nickel sulphate prices oscillated this week, while cobalt sulphate prices fell steadily.

SMM, August 27:

Raw material side, this week lithium carbonate and nickel sulphate prices fluctuated, while cobalt sulphate prices fell steadily. This week, by material type—ternary, LCO, and LFP—the LFP hydrometallurgy side: Taking LFP electrode black mass as an example, its current price is 6,600-7,000 yuan per % lithium, basically flat WoW from last Thursday's transaction. Meanwhile, the current price of LFP battery black mass is 5,700-6,300 yuan per % lithium, and its price spread with electrode black mass is gradually widening. For the ternary and LCO segments, the nickel and cobalt payables for ternary electrode black mass are around 75.5-77%, with some high-nickel ternary electrode black mass from 8-series and 9-series still trading at around 78%, but all showing a slight downtrend. The cobalt payables for LCO electrode black mass are 73-75%, and lithium payables are 72-75%. Currently, as secondary cobalt sulphate prices continue to decline, downstream LCO hydrometallurgy enterprises are very cautious in purchasing, resulting in sluggish market transactions. Moreover, for pure cobalt and high-cobalt black mass, the payables continue to be priced separately for cobalt and lithium, with current prices slightly lower than those for the ternary segment.

[SMM Energy Storage Battery Cell Market Weekly Review 8.27] Battery cell prices pull back slightly, tighter US grid access regulations for large-scale equipment
[SMM Analysis] Battery cell prices in the energy storage sector pulled back slightly this week. Prices for 100Ah cells softened more noticeably, pressured by elevated residential ESS inventory and weakening demand. Outside China, the US further tightened access for large-capacity power system equipment, but the near-term impact on actual energy storage shipments from China remained relatively limited.

[SMM Analysis] US Power Grid Access Tightens Further: Will Chinese Energy Storage Be Shut Out?
[SMM Analysis] On August 26, the US signed the executive order “Declaring a National Emergency to Secure the United States Bulk-Power System,” bringing BESS, grid-tie inverters, and related software, firmware, remote access, and operation and maintenance services under the national security review framework for the bulk-power system. However, this policy is not yet a blanket ban on Chinese energy storage equipment; its actual enforcement will depend on the designation of Covered Foreign Entities, risk assessments, and the implementation rules to be issued over the next 120 days. Given that the US domestic energy storage industry chain is still not enough to fully replace imports, the feasibility of a complete exclusion of Chinese supply chains in the short term is low. At this stage, the policy functions more as a market-entry deterrent, procurement constraint, and bargaining chip, and it is more likely to proceed by first restricting high-risk equipment, mandating localization revamps, and gradually replacing supply chains.
