Chinese Researchers Achieve International Leading Level in Extracting High-Purity Lead-212 from Rare Earth Ore Slag

Published: Aug 27, 2026 14:13
The team led by Professor Wei Yuezhou of the School of Nuclear Science and Technology, University of South China, directly separated and obtained high-purity alpha-emitting nuclide lead-212 and its precursor nuclide thorium-228 from rare earth ore slag. They successfully separated and extracted 0.000158 curies of lead-212/bismuth-212 from a single batch of kilogram-scale rare earth ore slag. Recently, this achievement passed the scientific and technological achievement appraisal organized by the China Isotope and Radiation Association, which concluded that the overall technology of the project has reached the international advanced level, and the single-recovery rate has reached the international leading level.

Rare Earth Prices Continue to Hold Up Well, but Market Trading Activity Remains Stagnant [SMM Rare Earth Daily Review]
[SMM Rare Earth Daily Review: Rare Earth Prices Continue to Hold Up Well, but Market Trading Stays Stagnant] Overall, the rare earth market held up well supported by tightening supply of low-priced goods, but downstream follow-up was cautious, high-price transactions were difficult to advance, and actual trading was stagnant. In the short term, due to the persistent difficulty in sourcing low-priced supplies, prices for medium-heavy rare earth products may continue to hold up well; for Pr-Nd products, attention should be paid to the downstream demand situation, and prices may maintain narrow consolidation on a strong note.
