Platinum consolidated on a subdued note today. The US July PCE price index rose 3.7% YoY, slightly above market expectations of 3.6% and unchanged from the previous reading; it gained 0.2% MoM, beating the expected 0.1%. Core PCE rose 3.3% YoY and 0.2% MoM. Inflation indicators failed to cool further, and after the data release, expectations for a September rate hike firmed somewhat. In the morning session, GFEX’s most-traded platinum contract PT2610 closed at 455.2 yuan/g, down 0.75%; the spread between the SGE platinum 9995 best ask price and GFEX PT2610 contract held near 3 yuan/g.
Spot side, mainstream platinum quotations showed a discount of 3.5-2.5 yuan/g against the PT2610 contract. Suppliers' quoted discounts widened slightly from the previous trading day. Some suppliers chose to offer small concessions due to pressure from factory warehouse warrant cancellations, and transactions mostly leaned toward the lower end of quotes. Downstream enterprises remained largely on the sidelines, with subdued consumption. Overall, pricing in the platinum spot market was quite involutional today, with sluggish trading unchanged.
