Table 1: Arrivals comparison for mainstream markets

Data source: SMM Steel

Shanghai market: This week, hot-rolled coil shipments to the Shanghai market further declined. Specifically, northern resources had relatively concentrated arrivals earlier, and the data for this period decreased; while shipments from south China steel mills were affected by the approaching typhoon, with most vessels taking shelter this week. Looking ahead, after the slowdown in south China resources this week, there may be some rebound expectations next week. Therefore, next week's level of mainstream resource arrivals to Shanghai is expected to increase.

Le'cong market: This week, shipments to Le'cong increased. Specifically, north China maintained a low arrival level, while DDH arrivals increased. Overall, total arrivals increased WoW. Looking ahead, it is still difficult for northern resources to arrive in large quantities in the short term, and local mainstream resources are expected to remain stable. Therefore, arrivals to south China are expected to fluctuate within a narrow range in the short term.

[Vietnam] Vietnam’s steel market remained relatively stable, with construction steel prices easing slightly to around 530 USD/tonne EXW as the depreciation of the VND lowered the USD-denominated price, while prices in VND remained largely unchanged. HRC prices stood at approximately 514–521 USD/tonne CFR Ho Chi Minh City due to the same exchange-rate effect. The market could gradually shift from weak demand in late August toward expectations of a recovery during the upcoming peak season, with pre-season inventory restocking ahead of September potentially providing a phased boost to steel prices. Major mills are also expected to announce their new prices this week ahead of the September 2 Independence Day holiday, which could provide a clearer indication of the near-term price direction.
