[SMM Weekly Review of the Indonesian Market]
Strong Fundamentals Drive Up Steel Product Prices in Indonesia
This week, steel prices in Indonesia rose by at least 5 USD/metric ton, including Wire Rod (480 USD/metric ton → 485 USD/metric ton), Slab (460 USD/metric ton → 465 USD/metric ton), and HRC (500 USD/metric ton → 505 USD/metric ton). However, this does not apply to billets, as billet prices rose by about 7–9 USD/metric ton (458 USD/metric ton → 465–467 USD/metric ton). This is due to strong demand, as buyers need to purchase to replenish their inventories, coupled with some maintenance at the mills. Furthermore, on the export front, Chinese prices cannot be lowered any further and are currently rising due to high domestic demand for Chinese products; consequently, the pressure to lower Indonesian prices has disappeared or is nearly zero. This bodes well for an increase in Indonesian prices as long as the fundamentals remain strong.
