Prices climbed higher faster than projected, but U.S. banking major Bank of America Corp. (BAC, Financials) predicts gold may yet hit $5,000 an ounce. At the time of publication, gold was trading about $4,358, roughly 15% below Bank of America's target.
Softer US economic statistics, a weaker dollar and fewer prospects for further tightening by the Federal Reserve helped to speed up the recent shift, the bank said.
Morgan Stanley is even more optimistic. The bank's $5,700-an-ounce long-term bull argument, with metals strategist Amy Gower saying institutional flows are a key driver of the next big advance.
Central-bank demand continues to be encouraging, too. According to TipRanks, data from the World Gold Council shows that 89% of central banks predict global gold reserves to continue to rise over the next year.
The next test for investors is whether dropping rates and revived ETF demand will sustain gold's upward momentum following a spectacular rise.
