SMM August 19 News:
The futures market plunged today, while spot aluminum in South China remained firm. The futures weakened, and the spot-futures price spread, after yesterday's rise, had climbed to a relatively high level. The outflow of hedged cargo, including warrants, was significantly higher, but the destocking reality continued to boost sellers' confidence. Those shipping out generally opted to control volumes and sell slowly rather than follow the decline and give up profits, with mainstream quotations only slightly lowered to a discount of -10 to 0 yuan/mt, and circulation remained largely under control. Demand side, downstream players steadily restocked and stockpiled at low prices, and incremental purchases were released. Traders, initially cautious and restrained due to high premiums, gradually shifted to more aggressively meeting rigid demand. Supply and demand improved amid divergences, and overall trading was satisfactory. Spot aluminum transaction prices were concentrated at a premium of 75 to 115 yuan/mt over the SHFE aluminum 2609 contract.
