【Bangladesh Plans Phulbari Mine Development, Potentially Replacing 75% of Power-Sector Coal Imports】

Published: Aug 18, 2026 13:46

Bangladesh plans to include domestic coal development in an upcoming 10-year energy master plan and is considering open-pit extraction at the Phulbari coal mine. Sources at Barapukuria Coal Mining Company Limited said the deposit contains approximately 572 million tonnes of coal, of which around 472 million tonnes may be recoverable, with potential annual production of 15 million tonnes.

Excluding the Barapukuria power plant, Bangladesh’s other six coal-fired power plants require at least 20 million tonnes of imported coal annually. If Phulbari reaches its proposed production capacity, it could theoretically replace approximately 75% of current power-sector coal imports while reducing foreign-exchange expenditure and pressure on gas-fired generation.

However, the project still requires a final government decision and is expected to take around five years to reach full production after the necessary preparations are completed.

[99,000 Cubic Meter Ultra-Large Ethane-Ethylene Carrier Delivered Today]
Today (the 18th), China’s self-developed 99,000 cubic meter ultra-large ethane-ethylene carrier was officially handed over to its user, with technical specs hitting world-leading levels. The newly delivered ship is 230 meters long and can carry ethane, ethylene, liquefied petroleum gas, and other liquefied industrial or energy gases. It’s fuel-efficient, low-maintenance, and built for long-haul trips—basically an eco-friendly and cost-effective vessel. Yuan Shizhen, chief designer of the 99,000 cubic meter ultra-large ethane carrier series at CSIC Jiangnan Shipyard, said the ship mainly supports domestic petrochemical companies with ethane transport. It comes with an axle generator and an ethane main engine, cutting sulfur emissions by 99% and hydrocarbons by 18%, giving a real boost to green shipping.
